I KNOW for a fact that I saw a posting around here the other day that identified an on line program that could be used to determine the number of hits or visitors to any site for a particular time frame...say a month . This did not require downloading ...just submitting the site url

it started with a q...like quaontas or something ...anyone mind helping an older guy?

    You're probably talking about the Alexa ranking tool. This is not an accurate measure of how many people actually visit a website. Alexa is also prejudiced towards Eastern Europe, because that is where more of the users are located. Alexa is only able to track traffic of those with the toolbar installed.

    There isn't any way I can think of to make a program to track anonymous traffic on a website that you don't have control over, much less the entire web.

    Hmmm, never heard of that, so I read about it on Wikipedia:
    Like Alexa, Quantcast rates Web pages by ranks. However, Quantcast does not require a tool bar to be installed upon one's browser to obtain statistics. Instead participating websites voluntarily insert Quantcast HTML code inside Web pages they wish to have included in statistics.
    So this isn't going to work for just any website, as the code will need to be installed on it for statistics to be tracked.

    I was looking for an ONline program that would tell me the activities of any web site , not just mine. For instance, I would go to the online service, SEARCH for______(say your website)
    and the results would tell me that there wer 12009 visitors last month

    think the program is call quantcast....
