How Can I Learn To Be Able To Program/Develop My Own Sites

Hey Warriors,

Currently I have a programmer working for me on my sites, but I would like to learn how to be able to do everything myself, as it is so frustrating not being able to edit code myself.

I currently only know basic HTML, but would like to know how I can learn to program online, or do I need to go to something like TAFE/UNI.

What are the main languages that I would need to learn, my sites are mostly done with wordpress, but like I said I would just like to learn to program.

Thanks guys, all suggestions welcome.

A good resource for learning PHP/MySQL (what you want to learn if you're doing Wordpress) is MySQL Tutorial - Introduction and PHP Tutorial - Introduction

This site has some very hands on practical lessons.

I already had some programming experience before picking up PHP/MySQL so my experience will be different than yours will be. I learned BASIC on an Apple IIe I had while growing up. In college I learned C programming and SQL. Books and online tutorials were all I needed to learn PHP/MySQL.

So really you don't need a teacher to learn programming you just need to work through online tutorials, and books, most of the stuff would be online wouldn't it?

Is it worth getting a degree in computer science, or can you learn most of the stuff online.

You can find all things by online and yes you dont need a teacher, just get used to code. Follow the tutorial step by step.

If you want to use this skill as a job/you want to have depth understanding then it is worth getting a degree.

not really, but it does speed things along a bit.. learning to program isnt any different to learning to speak another language, each language having its own set of vocab and syntax..
with this in mind dont get discouraged when you see something done one way by one person and another way by another person, just like a language theres many ways to say 'hello'

degrees are only useful imo if you intend to outsource your work, good luck its exciting and frustrating all at the same time

Well if it's anything like learning a new language I should be fine, learnt dutch quite quickly Kind of had to as my girlfriend is Dutch.

But I agree with what your saying, I guess a degree would help if you wanted to do this stuff on a proffesional level.

    My grandma once told me...

Learn to program, and you will work your whole life making others rich. Learn how to manage programmers and you will be rich.

    She was a visionary.

ask the programmer working for you to show you what he just charged you $50 to change.

If your response is "You charged me fifty bucks for THAT!!??" you will be on your way to learning how to program.

I second what @Unomateo said. I've been programming for myself and others for several years and it gets old after a while, at least for me. I would much rather pay someone to do it and then make money off that, which also frees up my time to pursue other avenues to making money online.

    Start with
    HTML and CSS
    then move to
    JavaScript, jquery etc
    then try
    PHP and MySQL

If you can manage all those then you wont need anyone else, you will be able to do the coding part of your site. As for the designing thats a different story.

Do you learn better by reading or watching video's? There are THOUSANDS of tutorials on the internet for every kind of programming you would want to do. Most of them are not very well put together and many are hard to follow or understand without already having previous knowledge which they assume you do.

Youtube has tons of great and not so great videos on programming and web development. Look through Amazon and search for books on the subject you are interested in learning and read the reviews. I like teh books from "Murach" but they don't have every kind of language out there, yet anyway.

If video is something you can learn from with working examples to follow along with try out sites like Software training online-tutorials for Adobe, Microsoft, Apple & more they have great examples and source code if you choose to pay for that level. Basic monthly fee is only $25.00 USD they have videos and entire training on most languages you need for web development and software training from Adobe, Wordpress, Microsoft etc... so the monthly fee can really be cheap to get updated on the software you use as well as learning how to edit and improve your websites.

Tons of free sources out there too, I usually don't go past the 5th page in search results though when searching the search engines. If it is not within 5 pages of results probably isn't very great. Most of the good ones I found recomended on other sites and not from SE's anyway.

I usually pay when I need to learn something but can't find it or exactly what I need via other methods. It's worth it sometimes to pay and learn correctly or at least cut learning curve down quicker than hunting and hunting for what it is I need. Spending all your time searching isn't all that great either, even if you have unlimited time to spend doing it.
