Helping My Dad Get Started

OK well my dad has been looking for some ways to make extra money. So naturally I started thinking online. He knows C pretty well and a little C++ so he wants to do some freelance programming.

I don't really have any experience doing that so I am wondering how we can get started?

Should we create a website for him?
What kind of portfolio can you create with programming?
Should he join GAF, elance, rentacoder etc?

How would you get a new freelance programmer on his feet so that he can get some jobs and make some money?

Thanks in advance for the answers

    Dear teenmoney,

I congratulate your for having the idea to help (push from behind or give self confidence?) your father...!

Because you are already here, it means that you know the principals of IM: you must create and demonstrate that you are an authority in your niche. The same applies with GAF, elance, rentacoder: you must start as a no name, accepting projects paid with pennies for dollars and create an authority. But trying to give you an answer, I've placed the horses in front of the carriage: what is your father's the field of expertise?
And most probable, he will be the only one able to answer...

I wouldn't start with GAF, elance, rentacoder, because most probable he will totally lose his confidence. Instead, take a look on what is needed /asked related to a certain niche / site / activity and convince him to develop and offer A FREE SOLUTION / PLUGIN / GAME / ADD ON. Obviously, a site will be needed, but do NOT start with a price list, start with a hoard of traffic for the FREE gadget (or whatever may be). Once he / the site is on "THE WAVE", you can make the second step like GAF, elance, rentacoder, BUT having his FREE gizmo listed in his portfolio.
    I hope this will help.

    Success!

I think sites such as GAF, elance , guru etc has already got lots of specialised people and its hard to win a bid for an amatuer..I will suggest thst your father should make his portfolio and star his thread in digitalforums.com
    thanx
