Compressing the videos...

Hi Joseph,

I know you're asking about Mac, but I'll post this in case the idea may help you in some way or it may help others.

I downloaded a video that was 217 megs. It was in 1920 x 1080 and in .mov format.

I used a program called Any Video Converter and changed it to 640 x 480 and to .mp4 format.

The file size went from 217 megs to 1.2 megs.

For those with WINDOZE, I've tried about 5 or 6 video file converters and Any Video Converter was by far the best...and it's free.

The short answer is that anytime you compress a video you will reduce the image quality. Kurt's advice was excellent if the reduction of dimensions is acceptable to you.

However, 200mb for a 40 minute video is actually already quite compressed.

Reducing bit rate and dimensions are your only options and if your videos are already below 2000kbps in video bit rate and you compress them even more you are going to have fairly strong reduction in image quality.

Your best bet is probably to work with reducing the actual dimensions of the videos if that is compatible with the goals you have for distribution.

I second the vote for HANDBRAKE (HandBrake)

Specifically do this:

1) Select "web optimized" checkbox
2) Use "constant quality" and set it to about 24 to 26, (higher number = SMALLER file), and play with it until you're happy with size / quality.
3) Go into audio settings and set to mono, not stereo.
