Move Wordpress site to a new hosting account

Hi people. I have been trying (and failing) to find instructions to tell me how to transfer a Wordpress site from a Reseller account with Hostgator, to a Shared account (on an addon domain) with Hostgator.

Their support were surprisingly hopeless and had NO clue what I was asking, and I received several responses, including a link to teach me how to use FileZilla (!!!). Uh, no I think I already know how to do that!

Anyway, what I have found are instructions to do this:

1. Install wordpress on the addon domain in the shared account
2. Transfer all of the files from the Reseller account to my computer.
3. Amend the wpconfig file to reflect the new database name/username/password (for the shared account).
4. Transfer these files to the shared account addon domain.

The URL is remaining the same too, btw.

This sounds too easy, especially when I've had numerous attempts at doing this.

Any ideas anybody?

The only thing I don't see there is importing the database. Everything else looks good. I guess the big HostGator's support is slipping.

Ok now I have a stupid question.

If I have backed up the database, do I just use phpmyadmin to import it?

Correct. When in phpmyadmin, make sure you select that database for that site. Then you want to import.

Once you have the database backed up on the old host. Create a database in cpanel add a user to your database, then add privileges, next go to your phpmyadmin and find that database you just created. Then click on import to import your database.

Did that and now it's saying it can't establish a database connection.

Could that mean I've not edited the wpconfig file correctly? And will the imported database take on the name/username/password of the existing database on the shared account?

Thanks so much for your help - you're doing a MUCH better job than Hostgator did!

      Thanks.

Alright, make sure the username and password are correct. With cpanel it will be account_user

Be sure those are all correct. The new account is likely to be different than that of the reseller account. Typically the cpanel usename_whatever

I definitely have the username correct, but I don't think the password is. I'm assuming the password will either be the one that was used when setting up Wordpress, or it'll be the hosting account password. Do you know which one?

Ok, here's the fastest way to fix that.

If you click on MySQL databases in cPAnel, scroll to the bottom where you see the users listed. Delete the user in question. (Be sure not to delete the database). Then, recreate the user with the username/password you have in the wp-config file.

You wont be able to change the password for the current user because they won't match the old password.

Wow! 2 days? I sure hope you haven't been dealing with their support for that long. I'm glad it's working now and if you run into any issues feel free to shoot me a PM, email or through my website below.

      Have a great night!

Thanks for that. I was talking to them on and off, then eventually gave up (they were NO help at all!) and have tried several different things since then.

I have no idea how many times I deleted everything off the shared account and started again!

That's insane. I mean, a company should be able to 110% support the services they are providing. If any of my support techs pulled some on the fence stuff and drug a customer around, they would not be working for me. On the other hand, myself as well as my techs are all network engineers & developers etc.

Anyway, hopefully all goes well with the others.

Uh yeah. As per post #11, I've already successfully done it. A week ago...

Best to read the posts beforehand before you post a comment, because especially when you're new to the forum it totally looks like you're trying to get your post count up.

You may not have done this intentionally, so I thought I'd mention it in case somebody reports you next time.
