To Slash Or Not To Slash....THE TRAILING SLASH in WordPress

I must bring this to the Warrior forum. We GOTTA talk about this.

I want to hear from you all about the Trailing Slash in your WordPress permalink structure.

We all know the importance of having your POST title in your URL. That is just basic SEO.

And I learned from Jack Humphrey about blogging. I am sure some of you did too, and there are plenty of other teaching blogging. my point here, most of them tell us to set Permalinks to a certain structure that usually INCLUDES a trailing slash.

I am here to tell you, it's OK not to trail your slash. I have tested it and so far, all is well with the site, SEO and a new product I am launching that DEPENDS on a Permalink structure that has no trailing slash.

I'll tell you briefly how I discovered this. In building this new product, I was noticing that the product worked FINE when I had not set the permalink structure yet (during pre development). When it was just page=1 all was fine.

But, when I would get done with pre setup and go and SET the permalinks, all of the sudden the site would stop working.

So, I went to Wordpress.org, joined lists and posted for a full WEEK. Finally, one astute guy mentioned to me (for the fourth time) there is something wrong with your paths.

I knew that wasn't the case, but he had said something that made me think. He said that my browser was searching for the 'directory' even though it was only a page that it would return.

The site link would end something like this www.blahblah.com/this-is-the-page/

It was that trailing slash that made my browser THINK it was a directory, and therefore, was searching for related files IN that directory., thinking it was the root.

Well, a simple change in the permalink structure fixed my problem, and now, after testing, I can say, it is OK to set your permalinks to the NON trailing slash setting, without affecting your blog.

The best way to do it is to select the option WITH the %post%/ at the end, and just delete the 'slash' and hit UPDATE.

Then, all will be GREAT for you to test out my new product.

Nope...not posting it here...yet. I just wanted to chat about that ever so irritating Trailing slash.
