Mx Records can someone help?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me as I am have had enough of hostgator and godaddy sending me back and forth and not helping me with my situation properly.

I have a domain with godaddy that is forwarded to squarespace. However squarespace dont do email addresses so I want to host an email address kelly@domain.com on my hostgator hosting.

Does anyone know what I need to put in the A and MX Records to make this work properly?

I put mail points to IP in the a record

and the same in the MX record which i was told to do by hostgator but it didnt work. And they just arent very helpful and keep sending me to back and forth to godaddy saying thats who i should ask..but then godaddy tell me i should be talking to hostgator.

AGH any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kelly

You're probably going to have to clarify a couple of points before we can really help you.

You said "forwarded"... domain forwarding is different than setting a DNS record. Which is it?

I could be wrong about this, but I don't believe you can have one domain host a totally different domain's email... MX records or not. In other words, if you can't set the MX records on your sparespace domain, then there's no way to tell the Internet that they are supposed to go to your hostgator host, instead of your squarespace host... does that make sense?

I think your best bet is to just pay for the GoDaddy email... or actually, you should get a free email address with every domain that you register. Use your free credit for an email account.

    Hi Kelly,

It's certainly possible to have your domain name's records hosted with one company (i.e. the nameserver), and set the MX record to point to another server for email hosting.

Are you able to tell us the domain name you're looking to do this on? This will help a lot.

    Thanks,

    Tim.

Maybe I mis-interpreted what she said, but it sounded to me like the domain that she wanted didn't have a way to set MX records. Therefore, there's no way to have another domain host the email. Get it?

Sure, if your domain has the capability to set MX records, then just point it somewhere else. But it sounded like SQUARESPACE doesn't have a control panel with that functionality.

Her domain name is with GoDaddy, where she can set the MX records to point to another email hosting provider, assuming the domain is still hosted with GoDaddy i.e. is using their nameservers.

Her domain was REGISTERED at GoDaddy. From what I read, it's HOSTED at squarespace.

If you change your DNS settings in GoDaddy, you CANNOT set your MX records in your GoDaddy control panel... MX control is passed to your HOST.

Not that she's still reading this thread... at least it doesn't seem so... but the solution to this problem is to host the domain on a host where she can control the MX record settings. Get off of squarespace.

    Aloha Kelly

MX records can be confusing, GoDaddy has some help at Updating Your MX Records - Help Center—Knowledge Base and FAQ - not sure if you've seen this.

If you can't control your MX records, then you can send it to Google. But otherwise, yes, I encourage all my clients, and I myself send all my mail through Gmail. It works great.
