Help - Computer adding unwanted extensions to my files

For some reason my computer started making all my word files, and text files have an extension.

My notepad files all got a .txt extension, my word documents got a .doc extension, and my spreadsheet files all got a .xls extension.

I have had this computer for years, but this seemed to happen overnight.

The only thing I recently added to my computer was the SEOquake tool bar for firefox, but I uninstalled it, and the extensions are still there.

The computer added these extensions itself, to all the files that have been on the computer for some time. However when I now try to make a new word file or text file, it tells me I must add the extension, or the document will not show properly.

Any ideas why this happened, and how I can get rid of this extension nonsense?

Thanks
Glenn

    which operating system?

going to throw a dart and say that its windows and somehow the "hide extension for known file types" box has been unticked.

Google should be able to give you directions on how/where to find this for your operating system, just google "hide extension for known file types"

(I'm not really that good at darts lol)

The extensions have always been there, you just haven't been able to see them because of the switch that webpeon mentioned. The extension is the way the computer associates a certain file type with a certain application. You can't get rid of them completely - well, you maybe could, but you'd have to tell your computer what application to use every time you open a file.
