win server 2008 r2, best antivirus?

Hello everyone,

recently I bought an used but in perfect condition HP XW6600 (Dual Quad Core Xeon 3GHz and 32GB RAM) with installed Windows Server 2008 R2,
I'm gonna install SenukeXCr and some other tools, I'd like to know which is the best antivirus for this windows server version.

Any recommendation?

Surprisingly, Security Essentials works extremely well.

Others I'd recommend are Kaspersky & Symantec End Point Protection. The enterprise level of these 2 may be different from the normal small office/home office user programs.

Make sure your UAC is enabled as well & use the default firewall. 2008 R2 is pretty locked down.

Symantec Endpoint works well. I've used it for years in a network/server environment.

You might want to spend some time familiarizing yourself with security on a server because it's a different beast than your home PC.

I'm not much confident with Symantec stuffs, had bad experiences in the past, I did look at Kaspersky and Bitdefender:

Business Endpoint Security - Bitdefender Client Security
Work Space Security

Which one do you recommend?
Both are 10 licenses, which are way too much hehe but for the bitdefender I found a coupon for 5 licenses at $139.83, more affordable but don't understand much about what is included: Bitdefender Management Server, Management Console and Update Server. I didn't see those stuffs in Kaspersky description.

Isn't it like a common antivirus/firewall installation and everything managed inside that installation?

Sorry for those questions, pretty n00b questions, but I never had anything to do with server stuffs before.

Obviously I have to learn much about server security configuration but as first step I'd like to install a good antivirus/firewall that isn't too complicated.
Of course, UAC and default firewall are already enabled.

The Kaspersky is what would be installed on a workstation in an enterprise level infrastructure. It's also manageable from the workstation itself should you choose to not use the administration kit.

I'm not familiar with Bitdefender though.

I'd recommend the workspace from Kaspersky. It's their enterprise level AV, not soho junk. Since it can be managed on the workstation itself, you don't need the administration kit.

  I would call them and see what they can give you for a 1 machine install. I know the Workspace is usually like 50+ licenses - I've used it before, but in a 500+ workstation infrastructure.
  
  Before buying it, talk to one of their resellers.
  
  EDIT: But, like I mentioned before, Microsoft Security Essentials works very well. They don't have an enterprise level with central management, but it's a good piece of software from Microsoft.

I did chat with Kaspersky support and you know what? They did recommend the soho version, Kaspersky Small Office Security 2

Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 for File Server, doesn't worth? What does mean "File Server" ?

Hello,

It really depends on what services you are going to run on this server. If you just going to use it as a workstation, any good antivirus will do the job.

It would be another story, if you are planning to run Web or email services or something else.

ok, if the File Server doesn't have any particular limitation, I go for it,

all I need is to secure the server from virus considering that I'm going to use for SEO purpose only, SenukeXCr and similar tools.

At work, use Kaspersky Business Space Security very satisfied ! In the transition to this version, you can get a 50% discount if you show your documents stating that used to use another company's Antivirus

I have used Kaspersky small off. security2 and it worked well for me though I haven't tried symantec products for my network yet.
