Java is evergreen my friend. But as dagnyjbarber said, it depends on what are you interested in.

It's highly unlikely either one of them go away anytime soon, so it doesn't really matter. Just use whatever one you prefer.

I started out with C++. Then programmed in C#, then Java.

Now I program in Python and JavaScript.

I suggest picking the easiest language possible to program in so you can get more stuff done instead of struggling with the details. In my opinion, that is Javascript. For server side stuff, you may want to go with Python though.

To program in Javascript, its important to read the book "Javascript, The Good Parts". If you do not read this book, Javascript probably will not be so easy for you because you wuill not understand some fundamental principles of how it works that make it so simple.

I found Java to be be much more difficult to program in, as I probably would with all "strongly" typed languages.

Java is a programming language created by Sun Microsystems. Java is used mainly in the Internet and uses a virtual machine that has been applied in most browsers to turn Java into a specific application on different computer system.

It depends of your target application. JAVA are client side, they run under a virtual machine therefore require installations by the user in order to make it work. Think of this, what if the user does not has the JAVA runtime installed?

On the other hand ASP is a server side script. It would work on any browser without installation. Along with AJAX, ASP can perform as well as JAVA.

I would recommend JAVA for very complex applications,

For simpler operations I would use ASP (but I prefer PHP).

ASP is a server side scripting language. There is no such matter as simpler operations actually in my opinion. All is what, you need scripting operations or not. Well, for java platform you may depend on JSP also. If you are not friendly on Windows environment for development than you may choose PHP but I'd say one thing- in PHP all you have to do is more coding as built in libraries are more in ASP.net.

Java and ASP.net, both are different language and also used for different purpose. It does not justify that which is more better.
