How to put video on WP?

How do I get video onto a self hosted WP blog so the video player is displayed and it plays on the page, rather than linking elsewhere?

Does the format matter? I typically convert to swf files.
But if I need to keep them in wmv or other, please let me know.

THANKS SO MUCH... I'm sure there are LOTS of experts in WP and Video out there!

I use a plugin called Flash Video Player

WordPress › Flash Video Player WordPress Plugins

It's easy to use and works very well. I use MP4 files exported from Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum

It's incredibly easy to do this. If you actually use the search feature for plugins in the latest version of WP then there are pages and pages of them.

Hint to get round licencing issues search for
    Hana Flv Player

    Kind regards, Spencer

Hey guys, thanks for the info....

The MP4 things sounds good, but how to convert "TO" that format? What if what you "get" from someone is a wmv or flv or avi file and I don't have the program you are speaking of?
I DO have ProShow Gold (installed but never used it) and Windows Movie Maker and V2F (converts to Swf)... but not familiar with what you use.
I've sort of done the search on WP for plugins already but had a hard time understanding what to pick and how to implement.

(also, my client is not upgraded to 2.7 yet and I'm afraid if I upgrade him, I'll break something!)
I'm a bit WP / php challenged. And maybe the "pages and pages of plugins" is the problem. :p

If you know where to send me in the forum to get WP assistance that would be great.
If my client gives me a video, it's usually a .wmv file, so not sure what options I have to start with that or if I should ask him to save it as something else. I'm afraid I'm going to need a bit of hand holding to get the hang of this.
I can be a pretty quick study most of the time...so of course I want to be doing "for me" sooner than later!

My temporary fix for the video on his blog right now is is link to a hosted swf file. You can see it by looking for coach-al site and then add the blog at the end.

(I created the header and try to help him with this blog where I can, but really need to get up to speed with WP and video, etc.)
On a bit different note, saw a really cool use of YouTube and it blew me away with how many features and links and tabs they have, including the background, etc..
I would love to understand out how to put something like that together.

I'm not allowed to post links yet, so just search for TheRealBahamas on YouTube and you can find. It's worth checking out.
      THANKS AGAIN,
      Christine

BTW, Spencer -- saw your sales page... pretty interesting.... does your product come with the actual software (Camtasia/Camstudio)? It wasn't clear and then I figured it was to teach you HOW to use the software. Right?

OK, I have now downloaded THREE plugins (they are on my desktop)...

    Hana-FLV-player, Flv-embed.1.2.1 and flash-video-player.3.1.5.

I also downloaded some freeware for converting just about any format to any format called Any-Video-Converter.

Which one would you recommend I upload...
and I assume I put it in the plugin folder?

After that, what is the next step?

    Thanks for your patience!

      Hi,

Your best bet is to upload ALL the plugins then activate one at a time (individually) to test their functionality against what you want. Don't forget to set up any options/settings in the settings menu. I am presuming you are using at least WP 2.6 or 2.7 here. If not your first task should be to update to the latest version as the integration directly into WP makes getting new themes and plugins etc. plus automatic upgrades that much easier.

Re: converting formats (of ANY file to ANY other) your best bet is to do a Google search for the specific type of file format conversion to the other. However for a huge multi-page list of converters (some paid, many free) you can try this list. (Ah! Sorry I don't have 15 posts here yet but if you follow me on twitter (see below) I always follow back - DM me and I'll send you all the links. (that goes for anyone else here too.) Otherwise, as I said, just Google - you'll find them easily.

I've used a several different ones at different times but needed to convert so infrequently that I can only remember using:

      1. CuCuSoft MPEG to DVD converter
      2. AVS Software has a number of converters & viewers - most paid unfortunately
      3. Sothink/Sourcetec also has various tools you may want to review - free trials are available for many, but may leave watermarks. Their .swf online downloader works great and is free.

Hope that helps and doesn't confuse with too many choices. Sadly that's the problem too many choices. Also there are MANY more if you want to run dual boot to Linux ;-)

Thanks... but sure sounds like alot of work.

Is it possible to just insert html code somehow, just like you do on a static html page? Of course I switched the wsywig to html and tried that and it didn't get me the result I wanted.

OR, can you somehow insert a YouTube video and it will appear as a player? I also think I saw some from Vimeo and some places like that.

Thanks for your help... maybe an easy way first would be good, then graduate into the plug in.

Also... will upgrading to 2.7 break a template or is it pretty safe to upgrade?

for my mainstream projects, in order to save bandwidth, and also generate traffic from yuotube. i brand my videos, upload them to youtube and play them on my blog with WP's ZD-Player plugin. I can't post links yet I guess, but google "zd-player plugin" and you'll find it quick. it uses the youtube API to create a much sexier looking video player, without the fugly youtube setup

    Christine,

If you use V2F, just run the wmv file through it and add one of the players in the package.

Then upload the swf file and pl_swf to the root of the blog.

Copy the code from the paste.txt file into your page/post in html view.

    It should play fine.

You can see an example here with V2F players, most of the pages under "AVA Happenings" are video posts.

    Audio Video Articles

    Dave.
