Temporary Email Block List + Anti-Spam for Forums!

Spam really pisses me off, so I'm wrote up two guides and accompanying lists last week.

It bans:

temporary email (disposable) email addresses
forum registrations by geography (China, Vietnam, USA proxies, etc)

The forum ban is a simple PHP tweak for you forum's (or blog's) registration file. It blocks up to 66% of spam. It's not replaced by a plugin, nor will it replace a plugin; use both! The list of addresses is maintained at our site. There are literally hundreds (thousands) of /16 and /24 ranges being blocked.

The temporary email block list is also maintained at our site. I added 4 more tonight. At the moment, there's 432 emails addresses blocked!

This is free, and in our forums for anybody to see. It's not something we're charging for. Again, spam really pisses me off. These two things eliminate a huge, huge majority of it!

  Indeed that's nice, and I use it, but the goal is to prevent registrations by geography as /16 and /24. SFS only does IPs one by one. And it misses quite a few.
  
  Furthermore, with SFS your site is still hit by DoS-like behavior. SFS doesn't stop this, but this will. Those bots can hit your site 10's of thousand of times in a row, slowing it down or worse.

i already use stopforspam and they are quite good...even though it's kinda slow!

For the SFS users ... check your logs.

I bet you'll see the same IPs from China trying to reg thousands of times in a row. This, plus site slowness, plus PHP slowness, is how I first noticed the problem. Since implementing the blocks, the site has gone faster, and nothing slipped through as it had in the past. SFS still catches junk from anything not blocked. The remaining 33% or so (the hack blocks about 66% of spam).

I don't think I've ever noticed SFS to be slow. Down a few times, but not slow.

If you have a dedicated server you should install fail2ban and configure it properly

  I don't know that fail2ban does anything for forum spam. Not really an anti-spam tool. (Still does nothing for successful registrations from unblocked locations.)
  
  You also have CSF/LFD and APF.
  And on Windows, you can configure URLScan, and several other things.
