In the process of getting a new company off the ground, need you recommendations to my problems. In my previous business, which I sold, I had to deal with web development contractors with mostly bad experiences.

I need to get a website, a lot of graphic design, an app, some animation work done.
My biggest problems so far has been trying to hire people to do things which I little understanding of. For instance I know little about databases and web development.

I'm finding it hard to hire people, evaluating if they are honest and competent, etc.

Some solutions I have thought about.

1. Hiring a person who will handle all this general hiring for me, etc. Only problem is that I would be very dependent on this person and thus in trouble if they were to leave.

2. I have thought about learning the basics of programming, web development, data bace, etc, so that I can have a general idea of what needs to be done. I like this idea but don't have an idea of how long this will take or how much use it will be.

I have been in business for awhile and find the internet/ web based workers to grossly overstate their capabilities. I have also had consistent problems with honesty.

I have hired both overseas cheap locations and north american providers and find that the story for north american providers not much better.

I have found 1 good graphic designer from Bangladesh but I went through 5 people before i found her.

Some questions

1. Does anyone know of any online course I can take that give me a good general idea behind web development, databases, etc.

2. Has anyone hired out a person to assist them in hiring and overlooking projects?

2. Any contractor recommendations?

Would appreciate insightful responses.

Thanks
Nickolas

Are you hiring the person to work out of your office/building?
This might be the best course of action.

Also, you might need some sort of c level executive to manage the technical aspects of your business. No offense, I don't think you can learn programming and databases in a short enough time to be effective.

your bad luck happens because people you hire:

      a. don't have enough time to do your job - trying to earn some more they take several jobs
      b. overestimate their possibilities and underestimate your job - this usually leads to delays with their job
      c. you cannot explain or they have no experience to understand - you explain your thoughts, they understand totally different things
      d. you have no contract - unfortunately there are not so many honest people these days. without a contract you cannot ask the job to be finished

Being in your place I would learn how to manage.

In my opinion the person you are thinking to hire is not the best solution for your business.

Consider hiring someone that will describe your project in detail, split it into small parts so you could :
hire anyone on any part of the project then be able to easily change the person so the new one could continue the job.

At last, to develop a project you need:
      - a person that will create a job detailed description. Description per page functionality, description per functions, page mock-ups.
      - a person that will code by description above (add requirement here, to add comments into code)
      - a person that will check the code and test functionality
