Where to place pdf file

8 replies
I have a link on my "thankyou" page (Thank you) where people can download my dotcomolgy e-book.

I was working fine, but I had some malware on my website that I had to clean up.

After I did so, I get a file not found error.

The pdf. is located in my public.html folder and I'm unsure why it's not working.

Any help is appreciated.

PS - I added some wordpress security plugins.... could that be disallowing access to the file?

    Disable the plugin and test the download again to see if it's the security plugin.
    You may have to check the .htaccess file also.
    You could also just delete the .htaccess file then test the download.

    Then go to your permalink settings in admin and reset the permalinks again, the .htaccess will automatically be created.

    I would also upload a fresh copy from your computer of that PDF file, no point in taking any risks with something you'll be letting people download.

      OK, I deactivated all the plug-ins and uploaded a new copy of the e-book. No luck.

      In cPanel/file manager I do not see the "permalinks" setting. If it helps, my htaccess file reads.....

      # -FrontPage- IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti* <Limit GET POST> order deny,allow deny from all allow from all </Limit> <Limit PUT DELETE> order deny,allow deny from all </Limit> AuthName homewealthprofit.com AuthUserFile /home/vnwwslct/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd AuthGroupFile /home/vnwwslct/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.grp # BEGIN WordPress <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L] </IfModule> # END WordPress

      PS - The page with the download was created via HTML and not with WordPress........

    Are you sure you don't still have malware?

    About every 3-4th reload it goes to porn.

    I think you still have malware.

    And your pdf loads fine for me.

    EDIT: Sometimes the site doesn't load at all (maybe your working on it?)

    As far as the permalinks, I was talking about WordPress, not cpanel.

    Do you have WP installed in a subfolder and the html file in the root?
    You said initially: PS - I added some wordpress security plugins.... could that be disallowing access to the file?

      Well, that's not good. I was not able to recreate the "porn" re-direct so I thought I was OK. I really need help finding wherever this code is. I have both WP and the dotcomology file in the public_html folder. I tried disabling the WP security plugins but still got a "page not found" error when clicking on the link to see the .pdf file. The main thing is, how do I find this malware..... it's like a needle in a haystack and I'm not sure what I'm even looking for. I could easily look right past something. I've used WP plugins, but they did not find this malware. Is their anything that I could use outside of WP that could detect this code? Thank you for all your help.

    Ideally you'd want to restore your site from a clean backup.

    I wouldn't solely count on any plugin or software to find the malware.
    You'll need to do a little manual labor.

    The WordPress core can be replaced easy enough from a fresh WP copy, so you'll need to just go through your theme and html files.
    I'd also replace all the plugins with fresh copies.

    I definitely went to a porn site twice while I was looking at your link.
    I'd find the malware before worrying about the PDF, since it's likely causing the problem.
    I was able to view the PDF, so it is there on the server.

    I see these in the head area of your thank you page.
    You should remove them. (safe swaps and adminder)

    Code:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    (function() {
    	var ssto = document.createElement('script'); ssto.type = 'text/javascript'; ssto.async = true;
    	ssto.src = 'http://www.safe-swaps.com/ot/?url='+encodeURIComponent(window.location)+'&acc=85055f610235a3bf1c63a70f2aa088b3';
    	var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ssto, s);
    })();
    </script>
    </head><body>
    <img src="http://www.adminder.com/a.cgi?user=jbruno72" />

      Even though that's my tracking mechanism for solo ads?

      Also, I received the following message from my hosting company....

      "Thanks for the update. I have checked your issue once again and I am sure that there is no problem on the server and also not problem on your domain. I am able to access your domain without any problem.
      If your client facing that problem then I think the DNS is not updated of that client ISP and once the DNS is updated at world wide then all are access your domain without any problem. So please wait for the DNS update and it take 24-48 hours."

      Also, I had the folks at Sucuri check out my site earlier today. They stated, "We are not seeing any redirections or any signs of infections from here. Is it possible to give us more information about the users that are being redirected? Like OS and browser used? Any info would be helpful."

      So, is it possible I just need to wait on a DNS refresh?

      Also, I'm goin to try to recreate the situation now. If I can, Sururi help desk requested I send them a screenshot.

      Thank you for all your help,

    Not sure why you'd have the safe-swaps[dotcom] in there, that's ad swapping.
    The adminder, not sure what that is, maybe your tracking? You can leave it then.

    Maybe the porn came from safe-swaps? I really don't know anything about them.
    As far a securi and the hosting advice..... Not sure what to tell you about that, but I do know for certain the very first time I clicked your link it went to porn, then about the 4th click also.
