web-based software development project?

Hey Guys,

I got this idea of web-based software I would like to develop. Since I am a marketer and not a programmer I'd like some references of reputable companies on Elance or other freelancersites with examples at affordable fixed prices per project (not hourly rates) - been looking for them myself on elance but can't seem to find good examples?

your help is much appreciated!

thanks

Why don't you tell us more about the project, maybe we can help you create a budget? Sounds like you probably don't know what you're in for. If it's an extensive project you might be better off managing some smaller projects first before you try doing a larger one.

People think all they need to do is have a brilliant idea, then find the right person or team to do it, and bam! Really, it takes the right balance of experience to give the sort of feedback which makes these projects successful without ballooning the budget. And, this starts with understanding there is no such thing as "fixed price", all software will need maintenance in the future.

Just from my own experience, you are 100% correct. I'd say that it takes an interesting mix of programmer and marketer or the creation of a partnership between two individuals that make up this mix.

Hi Guys, thanks for the responses.

the project is simple. We want to develop a landing page drag and drop online app for SBO here in Belgium with landingpage link tracking and some more features. A little bit like leadpages but simpler and in drag and drop fashion.

Would like to give my advice also. Please remember that good software costs good investments. The main issue, based on my experience as a programmer, is that people who are new to web / app business doesn't have any good estimate of how much there idea is. Probably because there are so many programmers also that has $5/hour rate or even lower. So marketers or people who want to hire developers doesn't have any good standard for comparison.

One thing to remember when hiring people is the phrase, "You get what you paid for".

And lastly, like what already mentioned above, fixed-price is only good for small projects and is possible to a certain-degree. But since you are looking to build an application (which is a never ending development, maintenance and updates) you should forget the "fixed-price" concept.
