Is it possible to sell mobile apps out of Google Play or App Store?

I am planning on creating a mobile app for a specific audience.
It's not really targeted for general public,
so it will be out of place in Google Play or App Store.

Can you please recommend sites that host apps?

    You can sell Android apps from your own site if you like. Deliver the apk file and instruct the buyer to check the setting "Allow installation of apps from unknown sources" in his Android device.

    If you go the route of distributing the apk on your own site, your users have to have allow external sources enabled from inside their android phone.

    What you might be better of doing is doing is setting up a special "Beta" group inside Google Groups and then add your APK into the store BUT only people who are on the "Beta" group can download. This way you do not have to get them alter their phone

    Thanks guys for the input. I'm thinking the TRUST factor would be a lot lower for apps hosted outside Google Play/App Store. Hmmnnn... I will have to rethink this one...
