How to decide my VPS needs?

I'm currently on a shared hosting account at Hostmonster.

I'm NOT looking to change my host, but what I'm thinking about is switching from shared to VPS.

I have no clue how to validate the details here.

Off course the Enhanced package is better but do I need it?

What do I have to look at at my current shared package to know which one of the both below suits my needs.

VPS Standard
1 CPU
2GB RAM
1TB Bandwidth
30GB Storage
cPanel/WHM
1 Free Domain
1 IP
CentOS 6.4 (64-bit) OS

VPS Enhanced
2 CPUs
4GB RAM
2TB Bandwidth
60GB Storage
cPanel/WHM
1 Free Domain
2 IPs
CentOS 6.4 (64-bit) OS

Thanks for some more host savvy people can help me out here.

Guido

Why are you looking to switch to a VPS? Chances are, you don't even need a VPS and it'd be a waste of money.

Take a look at this article - The Myth of VPS Hosting: Reasons to Avoid It! Part 1 – The Digital FAQ

If you're having problems with shared hosting at yet another EIG brand (HostMonster) - find yourself a better host. Upgrading to a VPS isn't the answer.

Try moving to a decent shared hosting company. Get away from EIG before you go to a VPS. I spent 2 hours live chat yesterday with 2 techs who couldn't resolve a server configuration issue, and it's 24 hours with no response to the support ticket that resulted from that failure of the first line support.

I came up with a short list of shared hosting providers that seem reasonable and don't get many bad reviews:
      Glowhost
      Arvixe
      Frog Host - Web Hosting
      Site5 Web Hosting
      Siteground
      JaguarPC
      PacificHost

I moved several of my sites to Glowhost, because they seemed to be the best deal for me. They handled the relocation of more than 25 sites without a glitch, no downtime.

Hostgator, Hostmonster, Bluehost, Ipage, JustHost and FatCow are all heavily promoted hosts that are owned by EIG and most are hosted in the same datacenter owned by EIG and are quickly gaining a reputation for bad customer service and lousy performance.

current hosting company is the one who can tell you how much resources your websites take.

According that info you can pick VPS plan.

Usually shared hosting has 256memory, 30 connections at a time
Its important how much memory your sites eat, how many users on your sites at a time, so you can count total memory usage needed.

Like your script requires 32MB ram to execute, but if 30 visitors execute that script at same time, it might be a problem.. 30 x 32. control panel and other VPS taks also eats like 256MB at least.

VPS upgrade is usually not an issue. But i dont recommend wasting time moving to a VPS if you dont have any issues on shared plan.

You're thinking about switching to a VPS, but why are you thinking about switching to one? Are you experiencing some performance issues with your current hosting plan? If so, what kind of issues are you having? You've not supplied enough information for any advice to be given. Why not start by explaining why are you thinking about getting a VPS?

    Hi guys

great answers and sorry for not telling why I'd like to switch.

it's UPLOAD SPEED which get me nut's at my shared server.

I understand that they pack a lot of clients on one shared server so we actually get what we pay for.

It used to be great, not anymore. I just don't believe that this is any better at another shared host not AIG owed, even if I pay more then currently (about 9.-/month)

So my idea was to get VPS at the same host, should make it easier to switch.

But hosting is a very difficult beast, you can have a very bad or good experience at the same host.

I actually don't use a lot of resources, have one Membership site where we host the videos at S3. We don't have thousands of visitors a day.

Will research a bit further if I need VPS or not.

Where are you uploading "from" and what are you uploading? Most EIG companies are well known for throttling connections - that could be part of the issue, the other issue could be your connection from where you're uploading from and how large of a file.

My bet is on throttling - if they're heavily throttling, I doubt a VPS with them will be much better.

Trust me when I tell you that you can get a much better quality VPS with another provider. Personally, I think you'd have a much better experience with a smaller company.

It's really not going to be hard to transfer your sites elsewhere. You're going from one cPanel host to probably another cPanel host and there's nothing too complicated about that. If you need help moving, just ask someone here or at your new host.

the upload speed wont change much with a vps as most limit the bandwith that the server can use eg you share an 100mbit or 1gbit connection with many vps servers eg if theres 8 vps on the hardware you will get 100 / 8 = 12.5mbit of bandwith if the server has a dedicated line but Its not very likely it does.

I've also heard of FTP being throttled heavily on Hostmonster. It might just be their way of getting people to sign up for their VPS hosting.

Try a shared hosting on one of the better hosts mentioned in this thread before you make the switch to VPS.

It is a simple matter to switch from one to another, most hosts will transfer quite a few accounts from hostgator for free. Or you can do it yourself, it takes almost no time to move files directly from one host to another, without downloading via what is a relatively slow ftp connection via your ISP.

Here is a speedtest test on one of my VPS's:
    -bash-3.2# ./speedtest_cli.py --share
    Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
    Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Testing from DirectSpace Networks, LLC. (ip removed)...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Integra Telecom Inc. (Portland, OR) [0.83 km]: 26.067 ms
    Testing download speed........................................
    Download: 336.04 Mbit/s
    Testing upload speed............................................. .....
    Upload: 159.68 Mbit/s
    Share results:

And this is a bench test:
    ./bench.sh
    CPU model : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31245 @ 3.30G
    Number of cores : 2
    CPU frequency : 3301.000 MHz

    System uptime : 29 days, 12:08,

I think I made another mistake by saying "Upload speed" is what I hate currently.

It's my sites loading speed and not to up or download some to my hosting account - sorry.

This prrofs my ignorance when it comes to hosting

I tested my largest site/page and you can see the problem yourself in the screenshot link.

It's even worse when I'm my WP Dashboard and like to edit a User or open a page or post to edit it, takes ages.

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5U6...t?usp=drivesdk

You guys shed some light in respect to VPS (the link to a article explaining what it actually means in terms of costs and admin was immediately made me change my mind).

I checked and have still 6 month to go with my current host.

I thought about shared hosting at Namecheap, as almost all of my domains are with them and they never let me down, even using a few things which needed support it's a company I'll trust.

THAT is a CLASSIC sign of an overloaded mySQL server. Your best bet is to find yourself a better host.
