I got my first basic program running in couple of days of starting. It all depends on how you can grasp concepts & learn.

    For book, I recommend,

For video tutorials, check this site,

Log into w3schools website, start to learn basic about PHP within 1 month. Start creating pages using the PHP language for another 1 month. Search using forums for errors which you get while working on PHP website. It may take atleast 3 months to learn about PHP. To get good experience in PHP you have to work on atleast 2 huge projects.

hello friend, First of all i would like to introduce myself. Iam yogesh & iam a Web Developer by profession. Regarrding PHP, Its mot such a heavy or strict language to get started with. There's a myth about PHP that it is really hard & normal programmers unable to deal with this. But this is Totally wrong. First of all PHP is HYPERTEXT PRE PROCESSOR language which faciliates us to built new functions, themes pluguns & alot more. If you really want to learn more about PHP & all other language you can refer to my this website Section:

This is a hard question to answer without knowing your background.

I challenged myself to learn PHP a few years back now. I was competent in writing websites in HTML/XHTML and CSS with a little bit of Javascript. I gathered that my next step was to learn PHP.

Using online sources like those posted above I was able to grasp the basics and add basic programs within a month (spending a couple of hours a night going through training docs)

If you are a complete newbie, I suspect that the learning will take longer...

Bit vague, but hope this helps

How long the initial learning process just depends on how your mind works, and how well you comprehend basic programming technical concepts. If you are a highly technical person that thinks very logically, you will probably not have too much difficulty with the basics of programming. To REALLY succeed it helps to be highly creative, to come up with elegant solutions to difficult problems.

In general (just guessing) it shouldn't take more than a month to get the basics, but up to a year to be really proficient. After that, it supposedly takes 10 years to really be a master. If you keep at it full time for that long, we won't just be talking about PHP any more. Most professionals learn several languages, as it helps to be at once specialized and diverse in your abilities.

PHP isn't such a bad first language, it is very forgiving, though somewhat cluttered and unstructured, giving you just enough rope to hang yourself if you're so inclined. So learn the basics, but be sure to learn good habits. One or two tutorials won't be enough to learn these habits, so you may want to study up on some general programming theory to learn how to structure your code.

Regarding PHP, it is as simple as any other programming language when you learn to program. My learning route was similar to this: HTML -> Working with microcodes via hex editing -> C -> PHP.

There are many tutorials here: PHP 5 Tutorial

This is also a good resource for learning PHP: PHP: PHP Manual - Manual

Already knowing to program is not necessary, but it is helpful. Good luck!

You have to invest your lots of time to learn, understand and practice for learning php. PHP is not so difficult, if you get time to do practice.
