With all the downtime recently I am certainly considering moving. Where's everybody else going?

If you are moving to a new web host, be careful of cloud service offerings.

In my work, I've found that many cloud services actually offer perform poorly if you have a database intensive site. With many providers (AWS, Rackspace, SoftLayer, Linode, and others), the issue is disk IO. If you have an app that writes/reads a lot of data from the disk, you may be in for a shock.

Also weigh the cost/risks of shared hosting vs. VPS/cloud. With VPS/cloud, you often get an IP range dedicated to your hosting environment. That can be very important if you do email marketing from your server.

HostGator and a lot of other popular hosts are being bought up by EIG. You can see a list of them here:

Endurance International Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The problem is that they are moving all their servers into a single data center and overselling space like crazy. They make a lot more money this way but your website runs much slower if it even loads at all.

I used to host with BlueHost until EIG ate them up also. I've tried a few different hosts and found the best load times and customer support at Site5 Web Hosting - Free 30 Day Trial + Choose Your Location. (NOT an affiliate link)

I've been with site5 for a few months without any problems. Their load times are much faster. Their customer support response time is fast via email. And they have a free trial.

Yes, many web hosts have this problem, but there is a solution.

First, check if the web hosting company uses traditional hard drives or SSD storage. SSD allows for a file access time of 0.1 millisecond - it is many times faster compared with HDDs.

The performance also depends on the file system. We have very good experience with the ZFS file system which makes data reading and writing much faster in comparison with an EXT4-based hosting platform.

What types of sites are you looking to host? Are there any specific features you're looking for and do you have a location preference?

A bunch of different sites, from just content, to wallpapers, and some community sites (forums, etc). Most of my visitors are from the US.

        Hi.

To receive more relevant suggestions probably it would be better to specify:
        - If you need shared or VPS hosting
        - How much resources do you need
        - If you have any specific requirements
        - What is your budget

I've used Web Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Dedicated Servers | Totalchoice Hosting since 2002. Solid reliable, silent and cheap. I'm not associated with them in any way (they don't have an affiliate program) but when I see people having all these problems with hosts I shake my head and thank my lucky stars I've never had any host problems. I can't imagine how horrific it must be to be with a host like the OP mentions.

Jaguarpc.com are fantastic. Great team and support - excellent servers and they really know their stuff. They host some extremely high traffic sites and everyone I know who uses them are very happy.

I use ventraip.com.au for my Aussie clients with majority Aussie customers. These guys are also great.

Jaguarpc and ventraip are the 2 best hosting companies in my opinion and I've tried at least 80 different companies over the past 15 years.

I agree, Hawk Host has been good for me too. I have my main website with A2 Hosting now on a solid state drive (SSD) plan, very happy with them

The problem is when you have a lot of sites and a dedicated server like I do, you cannot afford to be jumping from one hosting provider to another every time there is a glitch of some sort.

The fact is, you really don’t know how good or bad any hosting provider is going to be until you’re with them.

It’s only then you really find out.

Personally, I can’t afford to go with some nondescript, dinky hosting company just to save a few bucks, because they could be here today and gone tomorrow.

I know because all those things have happened to me on many occasions over the last 12 years I’ve been doing business online. So I'll be staying with HG

Completely know what you mean; it's a HUGE hassle to switch host although it's a different story when your web hosting management changes and you're left with a different set of service than what you initially signed up for.

Personally we've tried HostDime dedicated box and it's pretty good though not the best. Good for price.

If you aren't concerned about budget then SERVInt will suite you well. They have highly secured and proactive management; been around for a long time though you also pay a premium for the service.

            In between we've liked FutureHosting

Moving hosting isn't hard at all if you choose a provider that will assist you with the migration. We are handling 5-10 HG migrations/refugees per day right now.

Never had too many problems with HG - they're no better or worse than anyone else.

Best thing is to have 2 hosting companies and spread your sites around.

I can recommend Host Duplex | XenServer VPS | Shared Web Hosting | Dedicated Servers Sam Jadali is the owner and has run WSO's in the past with special deals. Host Duplex offers all levels of hosting from shared, reseller to full selection of VPS and dedicated servers.

This is NOT a fly by night hosting provider and in fact is respected and gaining traction in the hosting community. He is based in California with servers in multiple locations from Chicago to L.A. and has a direct international pipe that can host international websites as if they were sitting in your front room.

Cost is not going to be cheap compared to the host gator smaller hosting packages but your sites won't be on oversold servers and support is dedicated 24 hours with phone support.

Edit: If you contact him let him know that I recommended you and that you are from the Warrior Forum. He may offer a special discount but I have no guarantee or control over if he will or not.

If you're looking for managed VPS hosting, I have worked with both Future Hosting and WiredTree and they both have excellent reputations and know how to keep your site lightning fast. Both have friendly and knowledgeable support staffs that care about individual clients, which isn't always the case with these massive providers. Hope these options help.

If you plan to get some traffic or load. Don't look at EIG hostings at all. They will cut you. And "more money" wouldn't help.

I did run from HG to cheap dedicated provided by OVH. But I can administer it. And I did help move customers and friends to Linode VPS with WHM/cPanel, which look like best solution for now.

HG was best in price/quality. Now with EIG as owner it will stay cheap, but forget about quality. Had to help a lot customer to move from HG and support maintained by EIG is far behind "BAD".

Hostgator was bought out by EIG in 2012, so most (smart) people are bailing out to the "unlimited" non-EIG companies: Site5, Arvixe, Namecheap, etc. Others are getting away from unlimited entirely, and using hosts they find here at WF -- members like Veerotech or WebhostingBuzz.

It's the poor saps that didn't yet get the memo that are "switching" (NOT switching!) to another EIG-owned company. For example, "switching" from Hostgator to Bluehost wasn't a switch at all! It's so sad. I can only hope that they'll even learn their error.

I was screwed by this company 3 times now, as they bought and destroyed the good host I'd been with.
