1. How Often Do You Power Down Your Linux System?

How often do you actually shut down your Linux desktops/laptops (servers excluded for the obvious reason)? Do you power down when you're not using it, every evening when you are done, or never - unless a power outage happens? What do you recommend? I used to never shut down but I find myself doing it more and more, at least every couple of days. I'm also not talking about rebooting; I'm talking about powering down and keeping it powered down for a little bit.

I have been working with computers since 1991 and this is my suggestion: Every time that you don't use your computer
    There are several reasons:

    - You may have an overcharge of electricity they are rare, but they occur.
    - Don't give chance to possible hackers even in Linux or spies to work on your system.
    - Electronics need to be cold to last longer.
    - You save electricity.

In Linux the start up process as well as the shutting it down process is very fast so if you want to use your computer for long, turn it off in those times.

Rebooting linux everyday is nonsense - you are doing something wrong.

I do reboots only for kernel updates. I use laptop, so short power lost isn't problem. I do use hibernation - never close my working applicaitons.

I don't understand why you guys in the West don't like to turn off your computers. I shut down my machine EVERYDAY and turn it back on the next. Everyone in India does this. You save a fortune on electricity. My machine has been running strong for six years now.

If it's your personal computer, there's no real reason not to shut it off when you're not using it. It's just wasting electricity which is bad for your bill and bad for the planet.

If you pop out for 30 minutes to the shop, then you might leave it on if you're in the middle of something.

And if you have an SSD, your computer doesn't take more than 20 seconds to start up anyway.

Turn it off when you're asleep!

My computer is on 24/7/365, I reboot it when the mood strikes me just to clean out the cobwebs and shake up the mice.

Every evening when finished working / playing. Used to leave all our
systems powered on 24/7 running Folding@home or other distributed
computing applications (even Seti for a long time) however the cost of
electricity got to be silly and we couldn't justify / afford 24/7 any
    more.

It's too hot here, and electricity is already expensive. When not used, it's turned off.
Linux, Windows and Mac -- does not matter.
