Help with Wordpress Directory Permission Settings

Hi, Alan. You're right; it's a permissions problem. It can't read the stylesheet files, which is why the page format is all screwed up.

The proper setting actually can vary a bit between web hosts due to differences in server configuration. But generally you want all directories under public_html set to 755 (just directories, not all files). In particular, all directories and files under wp_content should be 755.

If 755 doesn't work, you can try 777. But on many web hosts 777 will cause an error.

Hi, Alan. Glad you got it sorted out. I use Host Gator for many of my sites too, so I know 755 is the right setting for their servers.

One thing you may still wish to address. Your header image is set to repeat horizontally. So on a very wide monitor, if you expand your browser window horizontally, you start to see a second head shot, then "Wo"... well, you get the idea.

One simple way to fix this would be to find the line in your main stylesheet file (http://www.replaceyoursalary.com/work-from-home-blog/wp-content/themes/cold%20blue/style.css) that reads:
Code:

background: url(http://www.replaceyoursalary.com/images/wp-header.gif) repeat-x;
And change it to read:
Code:

background: #025590 url(http://www.replaceyoursalary.com/images/wp-header.gif) no-repeat;

I have a new problem now. When attempting to install a plugin, I get the following error:

Unable to create directory /home/replacey/replacey-www/work-from-home-blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Any ideas?

Just make sure that wp-content/uploads and all its subfolders have permissions of 755. That ought to do it.

What plugin are you trying to install? Perhaps you can try 777 like what Steve mentioned. Make sure wp-content and the uploads directories are changed to 755 or 777. ( I did encounter similar problems before and I resolved the issue using 777 on the directories )

It certainly can't hurt to try 777. You can always change it back if it causes an error.

And yes, by all means call Host Gator support. They may well have a quick answer. I've found them to be good most of the time.

I just got off the phone with Host Gator support. The guy was very helpful and pinpointed the problem to this:

It actually isn't a permissions problem but rather Wordpress is looking for root directories that don't exist anymore as I have switched from a previous host. The directory string:

/home/replacey/replacey-www/work-from-home-blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07

... should now be: /home/replaceyoursalary.com/work-from-home-blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07

He advised me that there's a PHP file that's looking for the old directory string and it needs to be changed to match the new one. He couldn't find it, however, so if anyone knows where I could find this file to change it that would be great.

Try checking the settings in the WP dashboard, Settings > Miscellaneous.

The top box "Store uploads in this folder" should be wp-content/uploads.

The bottom "Full Path" box may be filled in and causing the problem.

First try to clear out the bottom box with the top set to default (unless you changed it at one time). Or the bottom may need to be changed to point to the correct directory.

Hi Jeff,

That is definitely the problem area. The bottom box was actually blank as it should be, but the top box was pointing to the wrong directory string. I changed the bottom box to point to the correct directory string, but it didn't solve the problem. Should I change the top box instead?

The problem has been fixed. Jeff, I changed the top box to the directory string that it should be, and it's working properly now. I can upload pictures, install plugins, etc. as before.
