I have a site with over 30links from my homepage to my inner page. I dropped in ranking for just a spot, and i notice my competitor has just 8 inner pages links on his homepage. I have better article and good site structure.

Do you think i dropped because my homepage was sharing its links to the innerpages therefore reducing the quality links the homepage itself has? Can that be a cause for the drop in positions?

Thanks

it really depends on your content, and how well you are at recycling your content.
recently, there is a google dance, so wait several days before everything clears up

Nope. Your site didn't drop for that reason. In fact, internal links are a positive ranking signal because it facilitates deeper crawling of your site and link juice distribution which will help your internal pages get indexed faster and rank better.

Your site can slide one or two spots down for no reason so you shouldn't be worried. Hopefully, it will return to it's former position after a few days.

Internal links are good for your pages and should definitely help.

I would check and see if someone is linking to your pages that you don't know about. Remember that people can link to your website WITHOUT you giving them permission. Check to see your link profile.

  • It's more likely your competition did something to his site to pass you. Plus if you already had those links to the inner page it wouldn't just drop you now.

This is very true. Ranking is very competitive so if your competitor has a link building campaign going or anything else to boost their rankings, they'll take you over!

Right now your ranking by the hair on your azz, your ranking but it's borderline weak.

    Here's how to fix that...

Build a 2nd unique internal page targeting the exact same keyword/phrase. Build strong external links to the 2nd internal page like your trying to rank the page for the same keyword as the first page. Add a single one-way exact keyword anchor-text internal link on the 2nd internal page pointing at the 1st internal page (both pages targeting the same keyword).

If the 2nd page tries to rank higher than the first page then don't use the exact keyword in the 2nd page <title>, use a relevant unique variation of the target keyword.

That's how you build up authority for a page without messing up existing rank. Repeat as needed...

It depends on the WAY you do the inner linking from each page to others... And also the content!

It is not just because of internal links, your website rankings are dropped, there are too many factors considered by Google to rank a website on top.Among them, quality backlinks, unique content, user engagement on your website matter a lot.

Now internal linking has become very important, if you are linking internally, make sure they are natural... Instead of linking for the sake of SEO, try to link for users... this can help....

Anyways, your home may already be linking to all the posts/pages, as you may have "home" link, logo is linked to home page as most of the sites have....
