Is there a way to find out if a site has been hit with the "Thin Content Penalty" without setting up Google Webmaster Tools?

Thanks

    No.
But, if the content sucks, it probably does.

Oh that sucks, do you know when Google started applying this penalty?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, there's no way to find out without using GWT as the penalty is a manual penalty. That said, if you experience a big drop in rankings and your site doesn't contain quality, well-researched content, the penalty could be as a result of thin content. If your site has been penalised, just verify it on GWT to find out what type of penalty it is.

There's nothing to be paranoid about when a site has already been penalised.

Google has been dishing out this penalty for years now, but recently, Google has been sending out many thin content manual action notifications.

Without a manual review Google doesn't have a clue about quality content.

You could take any scholar page on the net & sort the words/text alphabetically & Google algo. wouldn't have a clue the page is gibberish to a human.

Google does know relevancy but that still doesn't mean it's quality as far as traffic is concerned.

Look at flickr.com, popular site with no research for anything. The site still has tons of value for photographers & anyone else that likes browsing photos.

Google refers to thin content as things like: doorway pages, affiliate spam, multiple keyword stuffed pages, etc... Thin doesn't mean not having text on a page.

Your traffic will eventually go down side if you hit by a penalty of thin content.

so how are they supposed to know if the decline in traffic was due to a thin content penalty or another reason?

Search for your domain name in Google. If it doesn't show up first or in the first few results, you've been manually slapped (for any reason, not necessarily thin content).

If it does show up, but your rankings tanked otherwise, it's algorithmic.
