New website for new country/location?

Hello folks.

Lets say I have a website www.xyz.com and I also own the Canadian domain name www.xyz.ca. To get rankings in Canada, should I put a copy of my website on www.xyz.ca and SEO it or should I simply stick to my original website www.xyz.com and re-direct www.xyz.com to the .ca version?

To get rankings for Canada then i would use the.ca domain and re-direct the .com

If you go with the.com domain, then make sure you set the country target in Google webmaster tools.

You can use the .com to rank in the US and CA. However, if you are only concerned with ranking in Google CA, redirect the .com to the .ca.

Redirect your .com domain to .ca is the best practice to get ranking on GOOGLE.

  I would like to keep .com version as it ranks well in other countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia etc. So re-directing it to .ca doesn't make sense.
  
  So re-directed .ca version to .com definitely makes more sense.
  
  However, some people are of the opinion that a .ca version of the website would give more confidence to potential customers in Canada. So putting a copy of .com website on .ca and optimizing it for Canada makes more sense.
  
  Do you guys agree on that?

If you plan on having 2 websites with the same content, don't do it, it's duplicate content and Google with penalize you. Just redirect one of them and you should be fine.
