Best way to preserve SEO when forwarding to new domain?

I have a company and product. Currently I use the company's domain name for everything, but plan on launching a new website for the product. I want to preserve the product's SEO. Other threads on Warrior Forum say that domain forwarding will preserve the SEO.
The question is, is it better to do generic forwarding or specific page forwarding? I see the alternatives as:
company.com/product -----> product.com
I'd rather do the first one because it's easier. I can't use wildcards for /detail because the name will not always be the same.
Any insights on this would be much appreciated.
