How does switching content from pages to tabs impact SEO?

I'm reworking my site to a more modern vertical design where the visitor continues down the page for more content. This Joomla theme is an example: Shape 5 Joomla Templates and Wordpress Themes Demos.

My current site has several different pages with very different keywords. However, under the new vertical paradigm, the content from the different pages will be reorganized into tabs.

I'll use redirects to keep my current link juice, but does the change impact current SEO? How should I handle creating backlinks for new SEO?

    Doing what you suggest could make generating any one SERPs harder.

    Really does depend how tightly niched your content is and how much content.

    If you sell 5 types of widgets, you could break it over 5 pages and target each page to one widget : Red Widget, Blue Widget.... and each page from an on-site SEO perspective will be easier to rank. A "normal" website.

    BUT, off-site SEO is more important, depending on how competitive each of the widget SERPs are will determine how much off-site (backlinks) are needed for each SERP.

    Put the content all on one page and your on-site SEO is diluted, you will find optimizing the one page for any particular SERP harder (harder to optimize for 5 SERPs than 1).

    BUT, your off-site will be easier all your links go to the one webpage and a link with anchor text Red Widget helps the Blue Widgets SERP...

    SEO swings and roundabouts.

    Throw in unrelated content, if you have 5 unrelated products Red Widget, Blue Thingy, Green Whatsit... and both the on-page SEO and off-site SEO got a lot harder.

    So depends... Personally I wouldn't target unrelated SERPs on one webpage, takes too many backlinks to rank for two distinct niches on one page: that really only works for big brands with millions of backlinks.

    BTW take into account setting up 301 redirects cost roughly ~15% of the PR flowing to the page you are 301ing from.

    Google has a dampening factor of 301's just like it's PR dampening factor on links. So it will cost you valuable SEO link benefit.

    I suggest you don't do that. Pages are definitely better than tabs in all aspects. I dislike sites designed the way you describe.

      This had always been my assumption, but the proliferation of vertical sites had me questioning my sanity. So based on the replies here, now my plan is to continue to use separate pages for each widget.

      Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have used the word "redirects". To keep the topic focused on page vs tabs, I didn't explain the situation completely. Currently I have a company web site with a section for a specific brand name. The new site will be for the brand only.

      I'll be forwarding all company.com/brand traffic to brand.com. Several days ago I asked if it was better to do a generic forward or to match exact url to exact url. SEO Power was kind enough to answer and voted for the generic forward, which would actually help link juice. I'm glad SEO Power also weighed in on this thread. That should help clear my confusion.

      I really can't say that I'm in love with them either. However, part of the point of this exercise is to give the brand a more hip and modern identity. Since vertical seems to be sweeping the web, that seems to be the way to go. If there are other modern trends that you can point me to, it would be much appreciated.

    Tabs are a single page, which is obviously completely different than multiple webpages on the same domain. Tabs can be useful but it's still a single webpage, you can prove that by looking at the Google Cache (text version) of the tabbed webpage (all the content is on a single page).

    Multiple internal pages are more useful for SEO because they can be keyword optimized internal links from relevant webpages.
