Unwanted Backlinks linking to your site

I heard you cannot stop people providing bad backlinks to your site which obviously can get your site penalised? What is the recommended thing to do to control or at least deter bad backlinks who decide to link to your site?

Any constructive advice would be most appreciated!

Regards,

Renee

You can not control it. You can not deter it. There is nothing you can do.

You can try monitoring it and submitting unwanted backlinks you discover to the Disavow Tool, but whether or not that works is up for debate.

Lay a strong foundation for your site by building natural and strong backlinks through link outreach, broken link building, reverse engineering, guest posts, viral marketing, etc. When your website has strong backlinks, it naturally nullifies negative SEO attempts on your site.

The only thing you can do is to disavow the links.

There are usually two reasons why someone would hit a site with spam.

    1. Is that your site outranks them and they want to knock you out the way. Not much you can do apart from disavow the links as they appear in GWMT.

    2. Is you upset someone who is familiar with SEO and they know the address of your site.

      Man if that's your plan....

Why not outdo the bad links? If your butt was up and running, you
      would not be worried.

      The only thing? Hardly.

Work your butt off, then have a beer.

Disavow? Why not make a wish when blowing out birthday cake candles?
      Same effect.

Do you actually think that Google would go to the trouble of building a disavow tool that does nothing?

If you need a service to remove unnwanted links you can use Google Penalty Recovery & Backlink Removal Service - LinkDelete.com. I used them for link cleanup after having hired a bad SEO company and when Penguin was introduced last year. My rankings dropped to page 10 for most keywords that had previously ranked top of page 1!

I am sure they could help with removing bad links a competitor creates to penalize your site as well.

You could also use http://backlinkmonitor.com to watch your links and see if any bad links are being created. That is probably the best site to proactively monitor results.

There is no way to prevent negative SEO. All you can do is to keep doing your best and disavow any suspicious links using the Google webmaster tools.

Google is taking more extreme measures in respect to negative SEO. The disavow tool also got much better than before.

    Hope that helps!
