I have a range of my own products which I sell exclusively on my own site. If I want to offer these products to a re seller, would it be OK for them to use my product descriptions or would there be a duplicate content issue with Google.

How do you think amazon does it? And a literally thousands of other affiliates?
Sure it's the same thing, but duplicate content it's not.

When people say duplicate content, they should be referring to duplicate
content that gets (maybe) a penalty.

Having the same stuff, words, etc., is not duplicate content in that sense.

If it were, every major newspaper in the US would get penalized.

As Paulgl said it's not penalty deserving duplicate content per se, it's not content that's infringing copyright.

It's OK, but if your affiliates only use your product descriptions they are building a thin affiliate sites.

That means all the content is from the creator of the product and has no additional value added.

Google doesn't like thin affiliate content and will tend to not rank the thin content sites very high. For Google it's a case of why rank the affiliate sites when Google has your site with the same content.

You should suggest to your affiliates to add value to the content or create their own/rewrite.

Examples of adding value are comparison sites, user reviews.
