I was thinking to create mobile versions of my websites so my questions are related to mobile versions.
Does having mobile versions results in an increase in traffic?
Is google going to penalize non-mobile friendly websites in future?
If yes, why does the warrior forum have no mobile version?

Yes it can increase SERP traffic considering Google knows what type of device traffic is searching from (ex: desktop vs phone).

You can use canonical tags If needed.

Warrior Forum is an old school vBulletin platform, there's probably a mobile plugin they can use considering mobile has been around for a few years now. Don't base your own SEO on what this site does or doesn't do, they rarely do anything related to SEO.

Lol, yea that's most likely the vbseo plugin they're running for vBulletin (view the footer source code of this webpage).

Plugins don't get anyone very far, especially when it comes to SEO.
