Pick one and stick with it both on and off page.

Sure the 301 redirect will take care of sending your visitors and link juice to the correct option that your using, however it makes no sense to build to www.domain.com when your website is running on domain.com.

In a natural link pattern that wouldn't happen either so if anyone was to review your site and it links you might as well have a image on your homepage that says "I'm a link builder, Give me a manual penalty please"

        Think of it like this.

You create a new WordPress site.

You set it up and it is now showing on domain.com

Then you change it to show on www.domain.com

Any link that you had to domain.com will 301 redirect to www.domain.com

You can not have a site on www.domain.com and domain.com within WordPress.

So you need to pick one www.domain.com or domain.com and that is the one you use. That is the one you build backlinks to.

That's completely false. What's special about wordpress, except it's made
          every fool a webmaster...exactly.

You can have both, 6 ways from Sunday. Makes little difference, if any, in 2014.

They are not 2 websites. And even if google thought the pages were actually
different pages, they are not, and in 2014 google is smart enough to know that.

But to say you can't have both is just silly. Nothing magical or unmagical
          about wordpress.

No real seo benefit either way. And if you did 301, or some
other redirect, then linking either way becomes moot. Both work.

People need to worry about stuff that matters.

Better go with 301 redirect from non www. to www., so that your domain will continue with only www. Point your keywords to www.

If you have 2 versions, then your back links will be divided in to two parts, Links with non www. and links with www. So to gain the entire value of the links you need to go with only one version either with www. or non www.

    Please check the following notes:
    1. With "www" or without it does not matter in terms of rankings or marketing. You can target any subdomain of your choice as long as you keep consistency around when marketing or doing SEO.
    2. Whether you decided to go with "www" or without, you need to tune that from Google and Bing webmaster tools. Simply register for an account, verify your website and define in the settings there how you like Google/Bing to index your website (with www) or without. It will also ask you to verify your domain name with and without the "www" beforehand.
    3. When you are building backlinks, sharing or marketing your website, use the format that you chose from part (1).
    4. Make sure your website directs the traffic properly when visitors are accessing your subdomain(s).

In summary, stay consistent when marketing and pick any format you feel comfortable with. In our SEO agency, we tend to trim the (www) from the domain names but that is just a matter of preference.

    Hope that helps!

For me with www or without is a personal preference and no biggie...

Whatever one you choose make sure you use the Canonicalization tag as that will make sure that link juice flowing is consolidated... It's easy to add this one liner to your pages... You can read more about it here: Canonicalization and the Canonical Tag - Learn SEO - Moz

Hope that helps and best of luck with your projects!

There is not any difference between www vs non-www, its all about the preference. It belongs to the Google Webmaster account under the menu of site settings. For the WordPress users, there is a Yoast plugin which automatically set canonical URL. They are both similarly as good with SEO.
