Privacy Protection, Godaddy, Hostgator domain transfer...

Hi everyone.

I've a newly purchased domain. I've read in numerous places it's advisable to have privacy protection in place to stop spammers, etc. Plus for this particular website, I want to be able to obscure my location, as the site refers to a different part of the country.

The Godaddy Privacy protection addon, hoever looks expensive, and also I've read that it is not so easy to cancel. However I haven't seen any most recent experiences from people, as I read stuff mostly from 2,3,4,5 years ago. Can anyone tell me their experiences with this service?

I could transfer domain to Namecheap, which I understand has the same service but cheaper, and less hassle. Should I?

Okay so basically I've been told by someone at Namecheap that privacy protection "cannot be applied to a co.uk" TLD!! What! In that case there's not much point moving over to Namecheap then.

I'm looking at a website called Domain Privacy - Protect your identity from WHOIS with UK-Cheapest.co.uk who appear to offer privacy protection for co.uk domains.

So in future, when I'm buying all other domains, is there a similar service outside of Godaddy/Namecheap, etc?

okay so apparantly, co.uk domains by law you have to show your address! That's news to me. Therefore I'll need to find an alternative address then...

What you were told is not 100% correct. Nominet UK is the registry of .uk domains and there is an Opt Out policy:

Only domain name holders that are non-trading individuals can opt out of having their address details published on the WHOIS. In other words, if the registrant is not a business or organisation and, in the case of domain names registered to individuals, you do not use or plan to use your domain name for business, trade (such as pay per click advertising, etc.) or professional transactions, you may opt out of having your address displayed.
So whilst you cannot apply a standard privacy protection policy like Namecheap offer for other TLDs, you should be able to hide your address.

      Hi,

Yes you're technically correct, I actually called someone from Nominet earlier. But because I am expecting to monetise my blog, then I would be ineligible for an opt out. The question is, do you think they are stringent in these kind of checks- like for instance how likely is it you'll be penalised for saying one thing then doing another?

There are alternatives for privacy protection. I never heard before that co.uk domains have special limitations. Check with the administrator of the service mentioned in my signature to see what is covered for co.uk domains.
