Thousands of spammy links to my site

Hello

Hope everyone is doing well.

I ran across a major problem recently, thousands, even hundred of thousands of spammy links have been pointing to my website (www.siteurl/i), these links were coming from spammy forums and such, foreign websites etc.

UNFORTUNATELY the /i/ directory on my website was being redirected to another page on my website which was being used, so these links obviously took affect. I made it so /i/ now reports as a 404 error.

My question:
What happens now? Do I need to wait for all of those pages to be re-indexed by Google, now those links display a 404?
If those pages are inactive, surely it will take weeks, or even months for those pages to be indexed, maybe even never?

My site has taken a big hit in rankings, for our primary keyword which we have optimised our meta titles and such around, we come up 4th, originally we were 2nd. We no longer appear for 30+ keywords which we were monitoring, I guess we got hit by Penguin but we have no manual action error.

Any ideas?

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi,

If your website is having so many Spam links then you are in a deep trouble and you need to wait or go for the new website and keep 301 redirecting to your new website so that you can do it freshly until and unless you can get your old site got deindexed.

Use Google Disavow tool, but first be sure that the links are really spammy. Double check this because I am sure you won't like if you remove a good backlink among them!

Interesting question.... By the sounds of it someone is attempting to hurt your site through negative seo... However there must be more to this than meets the eye.. Can spam links to 404 page cause such major problem? ... Firstly I think a lot them are going to be nofollow... Also make sure your 404 page is not indexed . Also check the http header of the 404 page and make sure it really returns a 404 error... to be on the safe side...

Google engineer John MU clarifies it here :

    https://productforums.google.com/for...ng/C-OoaJfb0Yg

Its a couple of years ago.... But saying that I can't imagine why this would have changed since...Negative seo attempt - yes... but surely easy to spot algorithmically... Is G really that stupid ???

Try to use Google's disavow tool. After the latest updates, it seems to be working better than before.

    Hope that will help!

Try to remove those spammy links by sending them removal request, if it didn't work then use disavow tool. If you've been hit by Penguin don't stop just here, try to build more quality links, you're not going to see positive results until the next penguin update.

301 redirect /i/ to a radical feminazi site

Alternatively 301 it to whoever built the links if you know who did it. I assume it's a neg. SEO attack.

If your rankings dropped as a result of a penguin penalty, you'll have to wait until the next penguin refresh. If there's no penguin penalty, then your site has been temporarily penalised as a result of the influx of spammy links. Disavow the backlinks and hope your rankings return.
