Do Amazon Associate links leak SEO?

I'm considering adding Amazon Associate links to my site. However, it would be minor secondary income so do not want to add the links if it would compromise my SEO.
It's a niche ecommerce site that sells a generic replacement for products from major manufacturers. The products are refills for equipment made by those same manufacturers. It's kind of a razor/razor blade business model, where my generic "razor blade" replacement works with every manufacturer's "razor".
We are adding an equipment review section, which we expect to be among the best, if not the best review site in the niche. That's not only because we tested the equipment extensively with our refills so have come to understand the equipment intimately, but because we collect as much information about our customers' experiences as possible.
The associate links would connect to the equipment and replacement parts from the appropriate review pages. A very long time ago I remember reading that outgoing links can leak SEO. Is that true? Are there other reasons that I should avoid the links?
