Penguin hit site - slight traffic boosts then back down

Anyone ever hear of this? In the past few days it seems like there are moments were Google is finally letting traffic come to my site then it goes back to nothing again.

Anyone thinks these are tests being done?

It is annoying because I feel like my site is on the verge of being released from Penguin but Google seems to be testing things rather than letting their changes stay. It seems like they are workin on something though. Also Webmaster Tools shows spikes going up and down for some days.

It is a good feeling when I start getting emails from spammers cause it means I'm showing up in search results for my brand site. We are a legit site but we sell a lot of banking type equipment which seems to attract people like the Prince of Nigera that wont donations for some reason.

Are you tracking your rankings? It might have nothing to do with Google testing anything as you say, and everything to do with a couple of keywords moving a few spots up and down.

I keep an eye on Webmaster tools, I'm not tracking any specific rankings though. It seems like something bounces around though - yesterday I had over 10 visitors from Google which is more than usual and in the morning I had around 4 then no visitors after that so far. Mozcast.com shows a high forecast in the past two days.

If you are not tracking your rankings, then nobody can give you an answer.

With such small traffic (10 visitors a day), sometimes it is just because the search volume was a lot less over a few days. For example, I have a few sites that dip down drastically on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Mozcast just doesn't really mean much.

      I've seen this.

I have a mortgage site and hardly anybody ever visits it on a Saturday. Maybe 10 visits per month tops on Saturdays. It's very predictable.

My site was hit by Penguin two years ago though and lost significant traffic. Used to get around something like 100 visits a day. That would be encouraging if there's a drop today cause it is Friday. My site is an ecommerce site. Hopefully it can continue to get search engine visits next week.

    Hi,

From my experience and this has happened to me in the past...sometimes it takes things to settle when Google is making changes especially after a recent algo update. You might have noticed when you first golive with a site, you notice rankings very quickly but after a few days your website has disappeared. It's because indexing and finding a place for your website does take some time to configure.

    Next,

If you so increases and then a decrease, you might want to check what your competitors have done in the past couple of weeks. Remember, you have competitors and they are running SEO campaigns as well so this can knock down your rankings if competitors have been boosted.

Can I ask, how are you tracking keyword rankings...GWT or using another tool?

    Hi,

I keep track on webmaster tools and also on my site host to see when people visit. My site has been around since 2007 and I'm trying to get it out of a Google Penguin penalty so that's why I find it interesting when more visitors than usual find my site on Google.

I try to keep pretty organic and keep an eye out for solid linking oppurtunities, at the same time fixing baclinks, have disavowed hundreds of domains and recently had luck removing a solid number of links too so that may help if they update penguin more frequently than they did last time around - or if they are still trying to revise penguin which some people think they are.

    Hi Xelaetaks,

It sounds to me as if you're being punished for duplicate content. It's certainly something I would check.

    Good luck!

That should be easy to check by looking at Supplemental SERPs while doing a site:domain search. I guess OP isn't scraping other domains.

Thanks but it's not related to duplicate content! My sits been hit with a penguin penalty for a while now as I said before which has to do with links not duplicate content. I've looked over my site and even made sure product descriptions were unique - got rid of old articles that had been scraped around the web even and sometimes add new articles so it the content on the site is original pretty much including product pages.

It looks like things may be moving up a bit with my site tho, so I feel like there may still be something going on with the Penguin update or something.

How do you know you didn't have a double whammy?

It is possible but we got penalized in such a way that it seemed like Penguin was the main issue cause even original content with long tail keywords didn't show up high in results anywhere.

I did spend time a few months ago though making sure everything on the site is original including product pages themselves so if originality has any ranking effect we can hopefully get a boost from that too eventually.
