Just do google search, when I was searching I had found some PDF. Search for SEO Books and select document type as PDF, it will give you lot of books.

  I highly recommend Charles Heflin's SEO20/20, which has lots of free tutorials, articles, videos, and more. Don't miss the menu all the way toward the bottom of the page. They're rebuilding their site, and the links in that menu lead to some of the best content from the old site.

It's easy. Just make as many backlinks as you can. Especially from .edu domain.

  No, it's not this easy. Good, effective SEO involves manipulating many factors, both on-site and off-site. The resources already suggested in this thread are good places to start learning.

Dear Johnben
It's not a difficult thing to start SEO. When you want to be a expert that's a fact I think. Many will give you advice to different site but I will not because whenever I felt any problem related to SEO....i only go through the search engines. By reading different article my concept is more clear which can't be clear by following one site.
So, keep searching it will help you more.

you must give comment to the .edu and .gov domain....
give the best comment and absolutely the owner of the domain will approve your comment easily.....
