How does modifying published content affect SEO ?

by Ajax13 8 replies
Hello Warriors,

I have modified a bunch of posts on my website which includes the content, Permalink as well as the post title. I had a couple of questions in this regard:

1) Does the sitemap gets updated real time ? (I use Wordpress SEO by Yoast)
2) How much time does Google take to index the updated posts and how does it affect the SERP ?

    Here are your answers:

1). Yes your sitemap will get updated automatically each time you publish a post or page. Provided that you are using the Yoast SEO plugin.

2). If your website has already been submitted to "Google Webmaster Tools", then it will get indexed within 72 hours at most. In many cases though if you are doing proper marketing for your website and getting visitors around, it will get indexed within less than 24 hours.

    Hope that helps!

If you really want to know how often your website is updated you can check your server logs for visits by the google bots

    1. Sitemap is continually update. Google crawls the same sitemap each time so even if it doesn't notify an update, Google will notice it.

    2. It will only affect SERPS if there's new content deemed relevant to the user's search. Say for example you add the word "best" then you will be able to rank for synonyms of best, whereas if you didn't have "best" or synonyms before then you wouldn't be ranking for those.

OP said he's also messing around with established internal links. That can drop a page If Google ranked a page with those links. Same goes for page titles & removing indexed content/text that helped rank a page.

        Surely same applies.

It's still a change of content if it's the permalinks.

Whether you add or remove words, will matter what difference it makes to rankings.

If you remove a word, expect *not* to rank for that word any more..

        If you add..

Oh boy another clueless Yoast user!

So you changed your permalinks because a plugin said there's a better setup right?

Did you know changing the permalinks of already indexed pages will damage those pages current search engine rankings and mess with any backlinks?

You'll now have a bunch of 404 error pages where the old URLs used to be.

Did you setup 301 redirects from the old URLs to the new?

Did you know setting up the 301s will cost you roughly 15% of the PR your old URLs had accrued?

If you don't know what you are doing and the permalinks change is a new change I suggest changing it back ASAP and hope it doesn't feck up your sites SERPs.

Worst thing about Yoast is the poor documentation.

Your blog/website sitemap will update automatically if you use WordPress SEO by Yoast Plugin and configure it properly.

How much times Google takes time to re-index and update your content and affect in SERP, it's depends on several facts such as your Domain Authority, Page Rank, Domain Age, Alexa Rank, SEO Score and much more.
