Posting a link on forums is allowed according to Google?

For example let's say you own a website that gives advice on trading stocks - so to find prospective clients you might want to go to a forum about that and say anyone can check out your site if interrested for mre information on a query relating to trading stocks.

Is that allowed? Is there any reason that would be considered an action that can be penalized?

How do you assess linking on forums ?

Thanks

    Sounds like spam.
    1. Show up
    2. Drop a link
    3. Move on...

Participate in the same niche forum or they'll most likely shut you down (moderate).

Your confusing SEO with spamming weak PRn/a - 0 forum threads. Yea, I know about the PR update last year, that doesn't matter because we already have years of knowing forums are weak when it comes to links.

    This is old news btw.

Use same niche forums for direct traffic, not anything related to SEO.

Basically it's just spam. Now if you participate daily on the forum and put a link in your signature and make good posts then you should be OK.

I was thinking along these lines, to be a participant of an online community. Maybe even keeping a link in my profile so if people are curious they can check it out rather than putting links around.

I see this on the news feeds all the time, people just post their links after a short statement, it's just spam....

The forum links are fine, just keep them on relevant forums so it doesn't scream spam.

BTW, I have a few thousand same niche links, up until a year or so ago they were all followed links. Never had any problems with Google. I also have a few thousand post on those same niche forums. The goal was direct traffic, which is still happening today.

Most people that belong to a niche forum belong to multiple forums all targeting the same niche, so, If you jump in & start participating & helping people other forum members will spread your links around different forum/domains when they see forum members asking help questions. That's one way to build up a brand, be a sub-niche authority, specialize in something.

Could that happen by sharing articles or rather that from participating people may check out your profile and see your site?

          Thanks

There are some rules on the forums. If you create a post and use links in your first post, then definitely it should be detected as a spam and link will be removed. If you can post on relevant forum, it could help you to get traffic. So I suggest you to select some forums where you want to post and be an active member of these forums. Create some informative posts and use your signature link to get traffic.

Look at it like this, if your goal is truly to gain clients and not seo, then you don't even need to post a do-follow url. You can simply post yoursite.com and achieve the same results. But, like everyone else said you still need to be genuine and not looking to use forums as your personal place for free promotion.
