It's not about the amount of keywords, it's about the quality of visitors that they bring you, meaning that you need to grab them when they are the a buying frame of mind. You can have one keyword that that makes thousands of dollars and 30 keywords combines that make the same amount.

Easy askloz, he's only new here :-)

How many? Why does that matter? Quantity is irrelevant.

It is absolutely true. Quantity is not relevant. I've been running PPC ad campaigns since before Google even offered them (I started out doing PPC with Goto.com which later became Overture).

There is no way in the world that anyone can say that a particular quantity of keywords is necessary for an Adwords campaign. No way.

it is true. stop talking out of your backside please.

having more than one keyword in your adgroup reduces your overall CTR, which affects the price you pay. If you say you have been doing this since the beginning of time, then you would know this, but it's obvious you don't know.

Ask any PPC professional, like Jeremy Palmer, Anik Singal, Amit Metha, etc, etc, they will tell you the same thing.

I don't care how long you've been doing PPC for, just because you "think" you've been doing it for a long time, does not mean you know everything about it... crikey, I showed a 4 year PPC Veteran who was spending £30k - £45k a MONTH on PPC. He thought he knew it all. I spent one hour with him, and showed him how to reduce that bill big time. Within 2 weeks not only did he reduce his out costs by over 40%, he increased his visits and sales by over 60%. Go figure.

And I can say a specific number of keywords does in fact have a dramatic on how much you pay. Sheesh, Speed PPC builds its campaigns around this strategy that has been proven time and time and time again to work.

I DO know, and that's NOT what the OP asked. I think you need to read the OP again. He didn't ask about an ADGROUP, he asked the following:

"Im starting a pay per click program for a product. When running ppc campaings what is a good number amount of keywords to use?"

Now please, what is the exact number of keywords he should start with for his campaign? 1? 5? 10? 1000? Provide the exact number so that we can all see what number of keywords we should be starting all of our campaigns with.

Again, my answer is that when it comes to PPC, quality overrides quantity. No one -- repeat -- no one can arbitrarily tell the OP how many keywords to start with. It requires testing, testing, testing!

Keywords must be selected carefully and tested properly to avoid having a negative effect on the CTR for your campaigns and to avoid spending money on ineffective keywords.

Most PPC pros know this, and would never advise someone asking that question that they should start with a certain set number of keywords.

            Come on.

As many as you can find that convert ... once you know what you are going. There are plenty of programs out there so that each keyword has it own adgroup, and each keyword can be dynamically pulled through to your landing page to help quality score. I have over 3,000 for one niche I market, each with scores 7-10, and good conversions.

When starting, go smaller so you can test your sites conversions, negative keywords, the hot keyword phrases that could be expanded, and etc.

But, there is no magical number. Start enough highly targeted keywords to make some money, then grow from there.

I don;t think so it makes any sense about how many keywords should i take for campaign. You better understand your product your end users and work accordingly.

I'm with Steven on this. You could have a successful campaign with a handful or 1000 keywords just as you could have an unsuccessful one with a handful or 1000 keywords.

It's not about quantity, it's about quality.

I have successful Adwords campaigns with one keyword phrase, and successful ones with many. There is no blanket "how many keywords is the right number of keywords" answer.

I would suggest 50-100 keywords to get started with. I say this because with new accounts often have a limit on the adgroups you can have, and I do one keyword an adgroup.
