Can on-page SEO beat off-page SEO

Hi all,

I am wondering if a page with all the on-page SEO stuff taken care of, can beat a page in the top 10 that has no on page SEO, but has a who bunch of backlinks etc and off page stuff??

    The question is really a tricky one that it is not easy to say an exact answer. On-Page or on-site optimization can be beneficial initially as you are looking for good rankings for your website or blog.
    However, Off-Page or off-site optimization is really critical to getting good rankings in Google.
    Even if you don’t optimize for on page factors you will be able to get your site to rank well in search engines with good optimization of off-page factors.

    On page & off page SEO is totally different from each other. So, how can you beat both SEO techniques from each other. SEO is not just doing on page optimization or off page optimization. To rank on search engine or to increase the traffic on website, you need to follow the both SEO techniques.

      Thanks for your replies.

      Of course I realise they are both very important. But I am thinking for a particular situation. Say for a keyword that does not have high competition and therefore is not being targeted. Say the top 10 are massive sites that are up there because of the backlink stuff and authority, but I come along and make a targeted site but it hasn't yet got the backlinks. I am wondering if it will manage to outrank them?

      Not TRUE. There are many sites/pages that have crappy content, but outrank all those sites who have excellent contents.

      Having good content and on page SEO , backup by good links will surely get some good result.

    I think both are very very important for an website so there is no win/lost. If anybody wants his website reach goal then website owner must have to do the both SEO.

    Depends on the SERPs, on-site is much easier with more off-site.

    As an SEO theme developer I see my job is to not waste any off-site SEO power that's been hard earned (it is so easy to waste it with internal nofollow links, noindexing pages, poorly thought out internal linking, slow site speed...), but I know a perfectly SEO'd site on-page/on-site wise won't generate a lot of traffic without the off-site as well.

    So though you can gain SERPs with very little off-site, it's far easier with a strong off-site link campaign.

    In practice you need backlinks, you do not need above average on-site SEO.

    The trick is to do both, work on backlinks and fix all on-site SEO mistakes so nothing is wasted.

    You need both, on-page + links.

    If the competition page is ranked without optimizing their page, look at their external backlink profile anchor-text to see what they're doing. Are they trying to rank, or no other competition exist?

    Also check their internal pages to see If they're ranking because of very similar internal pages that are strong (competition internal links).

        Yeah ideally you want to do both and there's no reason not to. Why wouldn't you do on page, and off page?

        To entertain the OP though, yes, on page can beat off page, it just depends on what you're doing and not doing. If you're doing local SEO then on page is by far the most important factor, since it's a different algorithm than regular organic search.

            Because they have different core algorithms. It's true that organic factors are factoring into the overall my business rankings, but backlinks are really not as important. You place importance on citations over backlinks.

            With Google My Business/places your goal is relevance of keyword topics along with relevance of local area. On page optimization issues.

    I don't think that will happen unless the keyword is one that no one searches for. Off-page is more pivotal to rankings than on-page optimisation, has been for a very long time, and will continue to be.

    I will suggest you both. Because i think SEO always good for all kind of website. It just generate a good traffic. On page SEO and Off page SEO both also works good. But off page SEO also generate a good traffic (Real traffic) for a website. It's better than on page SEO. Just it is my opinion.
