I think ahrefs is the only serious way to do that . But you can use the free version of majestic to have an estimate maybe..

According to what others have said, the best backlinks checker is Ahrefs but it's free for the first url only (resets everyday) and limits the number of backlinks shown for free users.

There are various backlink checker tools available. Backlinkwatch, ahrefs are the best tools that I mostly used for checking backlinks.

Yes, backlinks play an important place for website ranking and for increasing traffic. But the backlinks should be high quality backlinks and not spam links. They should be created from high PR websites.

To find all the back links of your competitors, follow the instruction bellow:
1. go to google.com
2. type link:http://www.[yourcompetitordomain].com in search box
3. hit enter button

You will see all the results of back links.

According to me Backlinkwatch.com and Ahrefs.com is the best tool for make competitor analysis. By these tool you can get the list of backlinks by which you can measure from where your competitor get good or bad backlink.
