I'm flunking AdWords, boss is furious

Ok guys, sorry if something is off, I'm a newbie to this forum and to AdWords.

My boss recently added to my day-to-day task the maintenance of AdWords. I went through a one-time 6 hour tution (which in my opinion was really scarce) and I read a lot on the subject. The problem - I am still completely lost.

I have been supporting the account for 4 months now and it's a disaster. We're losing rank, our ads show only in the morning hours, and no matter what I do, something always goes wrong. I have tried different ways to top up our Quality score and CTR, but I'm obviously doing things wrong. I even bought The Defenitive guide, but by the time I get to read it, my boss would probably fire me or I will go deaf from his shouting. I'm panicking.

Any help and advice will be appreciated!

I heard you have to pay more at the start so that you show at the top and that will increase your CTR, the better your CTR is the higher you show up or in other words the less you pay to show up on the top.

Make sure to start split testing ad titles first though, look at what your competitors are doing, especially the BIG ones.

You also need to use macro's to make your ads more relevant, the macro will then be replaced with your target keyword, search in Google for more about it or how it works.

ps: Don't take anything I say for granted, I never tried it, just read some guides on PPC.

AdWords has no impact on search engine optimization.

When you say "We're losing rank" if that means organic search engine rankings, that has nothing whatsoever to do with AdWords.

I've never had to use AdWords, all my traffic is organic (free) and it's obvious from the time I spent analysing the Google Adwords Keywords Planner you either:

    Don't have a high enough Adwords budget and/or;
    You are paying too much per click and/or;
You are paying for the higher priced general keywords.

Would be easy to burn through an Adwords budget if you choose the wrong keywords at the wrong price.

I suggest you find an Adwords forum for help, although some here will understand Adwords, it's an SEO forum and Adwords is not part of SEO.

You've never bought backlinks? If not, that's probably a good thing.

You've never created backlinks? And relied solely on people linking to you, or on-page optimization? If I misunderstand your definition of "organic" please correct me.

Most webmasters consider organic traffic as not directly paid for. Organic search engine traffic, social media, direct traffic from other sites...

AdWords is paid traffic. I've not used AdWords or similar for about 13 years (used Overture with my first business site). Been considering trying Warrior Forums banner ads to test the paid traffic, but been busy with other stuff. I'd consider that paid traffic.

Google organic search traffic isn't paid traffic.

No, never bought links for my sites, have sold them, loads of times.

Generated millions of backlinks via a variety of methods, never needed to buy links.

Sheesh you are an SEO newbie Yukon, are you suggesting AdWords has an SEO impact?

Only SEO impact AdWords could have is by buying traffic, some of that traffic (like any traffic) could link to the site from other websites. I don't think your average webmaster would consider that a serious SEO link building strategy. Paying for traffic through the nose in the hope some will add links.

Go on then Yukon, enlighten us with your mystical SEO insights on how AdWords is part of search engine optimization.

Knucklehead, what do you think would happen If the keyword auto insurance all of a sudden stopped showing Adwords ads at the top & side of the SERPs?

I'll make it easy for you & tell you what would happen. The first ranked organic page would double their daily sales without lifting a finger.

Suggesting Adwords has nothing to do with SEO is ignorant, especially considering those ads own prime real estate on the SERPs.

Hmm, I'll give you that point to a degree. It's true AdWords takes a decent chunk of the search engine traffic, but that wasn't my point.

I was saying AdWords plays no role in search engine optimization.

Using/not using AdWords will not have an impact on a websites organic SERPs. Please tell me you aren't one of the conspiracy nutters who think Google drops the traffic of ranked sites so the business has to use AdWords???

When discussing AdWords optimization it's nothing to do with search engine optimization.

Unless you are saying an SEO tactic of yours is only target SERPs that don't have AdWords advertisers, there isn't anything anyone can do to impact the traffic 'lost' to ads.

    Few notes to mention:

    1. Adwords and Adword campaigns have nothing to do with organic search engine optimization. This has nothing to do with losing your rankings.

    2. For best results, you need to pick the right keywords that match up with your assigned budget. Your geographic location and niche also have a great impact on the performance of your campaign.

    3. There is no one-stop guide that teaches you how to create the perfect adword campaign. You need to split test multiple campaigns and benchmark their results.

    4. Make sure you understand the objective of the campaign and its main purpose. Get to know your audience before paying for ads. Are your pages properly optimized? How is your conversion rate going? How much traffic are you getting each day without ads? Those are all questions that you must answer before initializing any campaign.

    Hope that helps!

If you really want to learn Adwords outside of your job then work with a small nonprofit, it's $10,000 per month free money for the nonprofit & gives you a chance to test real campaigns.

No offense OP, your boss is an idiot putting his business in the hands of another person that doesn't know what they're doing. Find another job.
