What's the benefit to shortening a URL? I can't seem to think of one unless you have a super long blog post URL, but then why would you do that to your blog anyway?

I use them for two main reasons

    1. Makes it really easy to track clicks.
    2. Makes it easy to change where links are pointed. Suppose I drop 100 links to a affiliate product that ends up not converting. Instead of having to go back and change all 100 links I can go into my control panel and change where the link is pointing in one place in a couple of minutes and all 100 links are now pointing to the new location.

Rather than use bitly or any of the other third party sites I use yourls (http://yourls.org/) installed on a domain I own. It is free and works fine and I have complete control over the links.

URL shorteners make sharing URLs easier. Even if your post URLs are not long, chances are they will still be longer than if they were shortened with a URL shortener. So, use them if you like. Your choice.

By using a URL shortener you have control over your links. For instance, if you are placing links in social media to a recent blog post, you would could use the shortened link instead. And, in this way, you would have more control of the link if later you decided to delete that original blog post. Then you could just go back and alter the destination url of the shortened link. This is usually possible with most link shortening services.

Another good reason to use a link shortener is that you are able to track your traffic to see where it's coming from.

This might be relevant if you are conducting content marketing via guest blogs and want to know which blog is producing the most traffic for you via your 'shortened' links.

It is good for micro blogs like twitter where characters are limited, you can shorten the url and focus on important texts rather than simply sharing a long a url.

URL shortening is good for tracking and sharing i.e if you want to track how many clicks you get from your twitter profile vice versa. Also limited characters make it easy to remember.

Also some companies can help you in making money by using their URL Shortening service. I think its a great opportunity for newbies and start-ups.
