Duplicate content in directory/site profiles? Does it count?

I recently started a new local business directory. And as the local business start to make there profiles. I see some of them are using the "about us" or home page content from there main site.

Can they get a penalty for duplicate content? I have always use unique content for things like this. Out of fear of not knowing if profile content counts as duplicate.

Any feedback on this would be great.

Thanks

Duplicate content refers to duplicated content on the same site, as opposed to syndicated content from other sites.

Run it through SiteLiner.com or CopyScape see what comes up and go from there.

That has nothing to do with the question.

They won't get penalised for that but it's advisable to always use unique content when you can to minimise the amount of duplicate content on your site and reduce the likelihood of getting hit by a penalty.

Content syndication on article and blog directories does not cause duplicate content issues, as long as…

The same phrases are not included and the repacked articles or posts are in different formats like PDF, infographics, doc, like that.

While doing content syndication, beware of sharing your content on directories that have highly ranking power than that of your original blog. Because by sharing your content on some directories, when outrank your original blog content.

Also, make sure that only old posts on your blog or syndicated. Google looks at the date published, while ranking among the same content.
