How to position myself in a new market

I'm a local business owner. I run a small but successful IT consulting company. I am expanding to a new city in a year and would like to get started with positioning myself in that city's market.

Local SEO-wise, what are ways to build traffic to a website so I can jump in the serps for google and directories like yelp?

How would you position yourself for local traffic if you had a year?

I'm thinking maybe a video silo site to generate traffic while I'm there.

If you want to rank locally in that city then take your local office information and start building a nice amount of citations that matter. Add in some social signals and focus on Google + and maps.

    my hottest advice is:
YouTube for local keywords.. it is amazing how you can get ranked in minutes on the top five of Google.
Google hangout, always using local term and some PR...
I Have done so for my local clients and works very well always..
    hope that helps

Thanks to both of you. Can you expand a bit on the Hangouts part? I have just begun using hangouts and am interested in this.
