You can use dash in the URL to separate the words. But in domain name, i will recommend you to choose keyword than dash in between the name. Keywords can be easily indexed and crawled by search engines. Hence, it will be easy for search engine to index your website.

Certainly not having dash in domain name doesn't hurt SEO. You should always focus on white hat SEO techniques, as it keeps your website safe from any Google penalty and you slowly start getting ranking boost as well.

Other than keyword spamming, nothing you do in your domain name with special characters will hurt your site. Even a little EMD isn't going to be a bad thing, but that doesn't mean it will help your site rank.

Your content and backlinks have more to do with your backlinking than your domain name.

And, sites that are EMD and rank highly only do so as their content is good and they have the authority status (due to quality backlinks from other bloggers linking to them) and not only because of that domain name.

So really you can do anything you want, dash or not with a domain name. Just do what's best for your reader.

I used to own a website with 3 words word1-word2-word3.net

It worked really well for SEO purposes but sucked for "word of mouth" purposes (it's not easy for someone to mention your website with dashes)...

But I didn't care for this anyway, it was a rank and burn site and not an authority, so I only wanted to rank it and it worked great with hyphens.

I do not mean that it works better, but it didn't hurt it either.

If you want to be serious and build an authority, try to avoid hyphens, help people mention your site.
