Well, there are two ways to do it: automatic and manually. Best automatic tool for link quality checking is Link Detox, but it's pricey. You can start with Ahrefs (free plan is not that bad) or Majestic: SEO Backlink Checker. Or you can do it manually. Export a list of your backlinks and check it url by url for quality (domain authority, domain age, number of unique links, social media stats etc.)

Never heard of Link Detox, but you already said it's pricey, so that's out for now.

Do you know of a webpage that gives one step by step instructions on what to search for & how to do the search?

Age I can figure out, Domain Authority, do you mean the PR?

Number of unique links, well this has always been an issue for me. I remember years ago checking my own sites & the numbers always seemed off.

You mean just going into Google & then Bing & putting in links: www.domain.com?

How do you get SM stats?

Anything else?

I do the same as him. It a bit limited because it is free. So you can not research too much in a day. But if you just begin, why not trying it first.

First you should ask yourself - What type of link you consider as bad links, Once you are able to find that you can easily extract the the back links.

If relevancy is one of the factor, then most of the tools fail to recognize it.
DA and PA can never be a factor which will say particular link is spam or not.

Outbound links can be one of the factor to remove spam links.

Yeh the site is laden with banners which is stressing out both my Fx & Chrome.

How do you know the data is even accurate?

It's saying 4 of my sites have moved or are invalid when they are live.

If you have a lot of links to check, then you are probably going to have to pay for a service. Anything that's free is not going to have a good coverage of the links pointing to your site.

If you can check them all yourself, then any sites and links that are obviously spammy should be obvious to you when you look at them.

I respectfully disagree. I don't think it's always obvious to the naked eye whether a site is spammy or not.

And there are many site owners out there who may do things unknowingly that make them appear to be doing something wrong, but that is not where their heart is.

As for sales copy, people "assume" that just b/c a person is selling something & they use strong sales copy that again, they are shysters. In some cases that may be accurate, in others it's not.

You never know what a person is like until you get to really know them & the same holds true with a site unless it's REALLY obvious.

Unfortunately online people are more quick to judge & ask questions later so that's the unfortunate downside to the Internet b/c of all the scam sites that are out there AND still remain live & making tons of money, while a lot of mom & pop sites were accused of being scammers (by Google) when nothing could be further from the truth.

If I couldn't get software to do the job for me, I wanted step-by-step instructions on how to determine if a site is in fact any good. Do they need to be removed from pointing to me, can I reach out to them if I want to deal with them, etc.

This is more of a side note than anything.

You do know that with the recent Google algorithm update any kind of automated backlinking is strictly a No Go area, and will see your site de-indexed PDQ?

Just wanted to make you aware, that's all.

Sorry, I have no idea how you jumped from me wanting to vet links to see if they are good or bad to the fact that I would use this info to do automated backlinking.

And these aren't recent, Google started this back in 2011 with Penguin.

I am using ahrefs.com to test my backlinks. It has limited results because it is free but it gives the results I wanted. You can also use backlinkwatch.com or majestic.com.

We recommend the following. These work:

1. SEOBOOK backlink analyzer.
2. and Bcklink Masters- windows only.
3. seo spyglass

The First two are only applicable for Windows. the Third is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Check it and see the full specs.
