Hi Guys,
I am setting up a new website in Google webmaster tools for the first time. I have heard that you need to set-up the www. and the non www.

What is the reason to this and is this really necessary?

Does that mean that you now have 2 Google webmaster tools accounts then?

Which is the best way?

Cheers
Chloe

Yes. Add them both, and then pick your preferred website version within WMT. You will just have one account.

Thanks alot Mike. So that means that you will not have two google webmaster tool accounts then. one with www and one without...so if we want to use the www version and not the non www what to do with that non www google webmaster tools account then?

By the way why adding both the www and the non www if you will do a 301 redirect anyways to the www version? Or you have to add both anyways?

You have to add both before you can pick the preferred version. After that, the other one is not listed anymore in WMT.

Because as far as Google is concerned they are two different websites.

Hi Mike, I just added in the www version and the non www version (so there are two websites to select from in the GWT) and selected the www version for both account but one account did not disappear as you said. Could you please let me know what you mean one would disappear?

        Cheers

Nevermind. I forgot they changed how they do it. You used to be able to pick the preferred version without adding them both. Yeah, the second one stays there now. Just ignore it.

Actually ignore most of what I said. Delete the one version.

Make sure you designate the preferred version in the other one.

Sorry. Not enough coffee this morning when I saw your message.

For some reason Webmaster Tools encourages you to do so, but you should not need to. I've never seen any benefit of having both.
