Find out who is linking to your competitors. Then find the webmaster of that site and let them know you have something better. You can use Open Site Explorer, Ahrefs, and a few others. You can also use Fiverr to have someone who has already paid for the program do it for you.

I am agree with this that you should "analyzing the competitors backlinks," but i will also suggest you these Easy Ways To Get Backlinks, Social Bookmarks, Press Releases, RSS Directories, Joint , entures/Partnerships/Co-Branding, Link Bait, Article Submissions, Awards also useful to get good back links.

If you are not getting from where to start, then firstly start by writing informative, unique content for the blog and article posting. Submit that post on high PR dofollow websites. This will help in building backlinks and will drive traffic to your website. After that, do bookmarking submission which will also help in building backlinks. Also, do other off page activities like Info-graphics submission, classified ad posting, PPT sharing, video sharing, Q/A, Forum participation and others. But, for all websites choose high PR websites as they will help in building quality backlinks.

Well, I would say the best way to gain backlinks is by getting them from forums and Q/A sites. I know its tough to get backlinks from them but once you get the backlinks then your can expect surge of traffic coming down over to you ! So, I would say the best place to get backlinks is from them but also you should also keep your eyes over the other places like Social media, blog posting and all they are also good source of the traffic.

Sorry, but what kinds of blogs you mean? As I know most of blogs (ie websites) are nofollow!? So how adding comments to them helps ranking? What is the point I am unaware of?

Lots of ways to jumpstart your backlinking efforts including guest blogging (assuming the site offers a do follow backlink to authors). Just be sure you are not publishing your content on those article distribution sites. That's not what guest blogging or article marketing is really about. You need real blogs from your own niche that agree to republish your content, linking back to your site. You can further take the time to backlink to those pages which have published your content, from a variety of other sources/sites to give those pages the spotlight and get them noticed by Google even faster. Your pages being linked to will have a better chance of ranking in that way. Easy to do, but you need to be able to write very high quality content for guest blog posts. You could most likely outsource that if you can find a quality writer to do the work.

The easiest way, and on auto-pliot, is to write your own content and then add that on you home page. When other website owners come through your website, there is a good chance that they will want to post your articles and content on their site.

On each article, make sure you add a resource box that directs to your home page or website.

Over time, a lot of people are going to post your articles on their site and getting you more and more backlinks.

Find a niche directory that matches the topic of your site, or navigate to the most appropriate category of one of the better general directories, not any of the thousands of junk ones. The sites that are listed in that category are good prospects for link partners. These are sites that are not only relevant to your content but they are likely to be sites whose webmasters are interested in building links. You might also want to submit your own site to the directory. Directories aren't bad links -- bad directories are bad links.

Very few high quality forums offer a do follow backlink anymore. And, while you can get do follow backlinks from some forums, they are most likely from lower quality, spammed up or newer sites. Those backlinks are not really worth having anyway.

Forum marketing is about relationship building not backlinking, same as with email lists.

Comment on “DoFollow” blogs. By default, WordPress blogs have the HTML “NoFollow” attribute on links that point away. Blogs do this to prevent “link bleed” and prevent spammers from inundating their blog with irrelevant comments. DoFollow blogs, on the other hand, don’t have this limitation – and you can use this to your advantage to get backlinks.

Backlinks are not as critical as they once were, I was experimenting with a duplicate site with same content minus backlinks and got to number one on Google organic search for my same keywords, so go figure, all that time wasted building backlinks and it turns out they can do as much harm as good in organic search results.

The original question is impossible to answer without knowing the type of business, and the SEO/marketing budget.

My best answer based on the lack of info is to do:

1) Manual outreach
2) Broken link building

If the original poster doesn't know what these are, then hire an SEO company who does.
