Hi!
I would like to add my site to some webdesign sites to get feedback on the layout.
Will it be bad for my ranking if i get backlinks from them, since my bussiness is an massage bussiness?

Sounds a bit like spam, irrelevant links do not hurt your profile. However if a lot of links come from "spammy" style places you will have problems with Penguin. Just don't over do it.

It's not going to destroy your site, but there has to be some revelance.

It's going to be bad if the ratio is really abnormal.

For example, having 90% links from music production sites and a 10% from
massage related forum links is going to raise a red flag to go0gle.

Try to keep things normal and natural and you won't have any problems.

As long as the links aren't nofollow they'll pass PageRank and anchor text benefit.

Whether Google will see the links are bad is a numbers game, if you privately (not from a popular link seller) buy one backlink for example from an unrelated site with perfect anchor text Google is highly unlikely to catch you are buying links. On the other hand buy thousands of links with identical anchor text from anyone selling links with no care what the domains link to etc... and you are asking for trouble.

Buying links is pretty much worst case scenario for a Google penalty, but similar is true for acquiring links from any source, if it's too many and obviously gaming Google you could be hit: I got millions of backlinks from giving themes away with a backlink in the footer, was too much and was hit with an unnatural links penalty. Had it been 100 backlinks say, probably would have been fine, but it was millions (webmasters like free AdSense ready themes :-)).

IMO....its just a wastage to time to build such kind of links.

The best kind of backlinks you can get are relevant backlinks from authority sites. But if you have the opportunity to get a good backlink from an irrelevant site, seize it, It won't affect your rankings negatively.

You're not going to have a problem if you do this. Don't worry about it. A handful of links from non relevant sites is nothing to be concerned about.

It won't hurt your seo rankings if it is no-follow link.

    Cool thanks!

Also, do links from directories and social business pages count as backlinks?
How do i know if a link is follow / no-follow?

Any link which lacks a nofollow rel attribute or is on a page which lacks a nofollow robots meta tag counts as a backlink. The webpage the link is on also has to be indexed by Google, obviously a page that's not indexed (Google doesn't know exists) can't count as a backlink.

To check a page for a nofollow robots meta tag view source and check the head code for a robots meta tag that includes nofollow. You'll be looking for something like

      noindex,nofollow
      index,nofollow

If you see the above as part of a meta tag all links from the page are nofollow.

For individual links you can either view source and look for rel="nofollow" as part of the links HTML code or install a browser addon which highlights nofollow links. In Google Chrome I'm using https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...cndafapdijmiid for highlighting nofollow links. I have it set to have a red border around the nofollow links like this image:

BTW if you have nofollow links on your site they delete link benefit, nofollow is damaging SEO wise.

Thanks David! Now i understand how it works.
What´s the normal setting for social media pages and directories like yelp, yellow pages etc?
    (follow or no-follow)

Also, I think the answer to this one is no, but is there any point in submitting a local swedish bussiness to international directories?

All the social networks Facebook, Google+, Twitter etc... have nofollow links.

No idea bout Yelp etc... I don't use them for links. Go check where your link would be, if nofollow they have no DIRECT SEO value.

If you use Firefox go to my sig (below), Select all the text and links in my sig (left click hold at the end of the sig, drag mouse to the top of sig), Right Click and select "View Selection Source".

A little code source window will popup just showing the HTML code that generates the sig code, you will note all the sig links include rel="nofollow". Links from this forum have no direct SEO value.

You can do this check on any link on a webpage. Doesn't tell you if there's a nofollow robots meta tag, but at least you know if there's a nofollow attribute on the actual link.

Google Chrome has a similar option, as above, but right click and select "Inspect Element".

My signature which is below my post has the text I posted above, but the words WordPress SEO Theme is a link, not text. You must be confused since even logged out users see forum signatures.

There's little point from an SEO perspective submitting any site to any directory, the links are garbage.

David : My sig is just below here, look down...
