Local SEO for neighboring

Hello guys, I've having an issue with local ranking. I've read many threads and what not about local ranking. I believe I got the gist of how to rank for it like NAP, citations, schema etc.

Plenty of material available online and here. But for the past few weeks in my research I still haven't figured out how to rank for sub cities/counties for a main city.

  • Scraping this from Yelp listing for Seattle,
  • Cass Corridor Downriver
  • Downtown Ann Arbor
  • Downtown Birmingham
  • Downtown Dearborn
  • Downtown Detroit
  • etc
How do I rank for all those neighbors using local SEO? Will just working on ranking for Seattle automatically rank me for those counties or will I need to work separately for each of the counties? Lets say I'm ranking a dentist for city of Seattle. Should I just list the cities on the website homepage or create subpages with unique content for each county? Looking for your people input. Regards

Same way you do for your main city.

You use the words "Downtown Ann Arbor" on your page, in your links. You mention things that exist in downtown Ann Arbor (sites, events) on the page, in the links.

But its the same service I'm offering for each neighbors. Going along with Dentist, should I just list all the counties of Seattle on one page who should I distribute into subpage for each county?

What if the business offer dental service like tooth white cleaning and cavity filling. Now in Seattle lets say there are 10 counties. Do I create 2 subpages with service in the URL/Title tag and all the counties literally listed or should I make 10 pages with county name on the URL/title tag and list the services offered?

You'll have to keep using the place names in your content and anchors. You'll need loads of content and tags too with all the place names in them.

If you are taking time to craft a unique description for each dentist, you could easily target by county/city, rather than generic area.

Where are you looking to rank? Your Google Places listing will most likely only ever rank in the town your address is in. You can rank organically for other surrounding cities. I would create a page per area you are targeting only if you have good content to put on it that's unique. Also keep in mind that it's likely that the businesses in that city will outrank you if Google shows a local pack for the search.

Thanks for the link and will read it. It seems everyone is recommending to create sub pages for each district of in a city. For example just ranking for Seattle will be difficult but with addition of long tail keyword + districts of Seattle will be much easier to rank for. I have analyzed the top 10 search results and they are dominated by just yelp listing. I did some research into these listing and none of them seems to be backlinked to give them some authority.

I hope by building backlinks to my client Yelp lisiting and website, either of them should manage to hit page 1.

For the example, I was talking about just one dentist trying to rank for multiple districts in a city. Like not Seattle but its districts/neighbors whatever you want to call them.

So subpages is the way to go for each district. This make sense because its better to rank a localized subpage of the website instead trying to rank the homepage for multiple districts. And only way to rank the homepage for multiple district would be having list of all the districted there which would result in looking spammy and keyword stuffing.

To begin with, it's important to understand that Google will typically see any local business as most relevant to its city of location. So, if you're located in San Francisco (i.e. have a dedicated local area code phone number and street address there) your prime location and best opportunity for achieving high visibility will be for searches that include the phrase 'san francisco' or performed by san francisco-based users.

You are in a very common situation in which you operate in a wide service radius. The typical process involves creating city landing pages for each of your main service locations, and though you typically will not be able to locally outrank competitors who are physically located in those service cities, you can strive for secondary organic rankings for these geo terms.

To make this manageable, make a list of your 10 most important service cities/towns. Develop unique, non-duplicate content for each of these 10 cities. Create a section in your main site menu labeled 'Cities We Serve' or something along those lines and begin listing the pages in this menu. If you don't feel you can create useful, creative copy, hire a copywriter for this important task. Then, move onto your next 10 most important service cities. Build it in manageable chunks and do your absolute best job on every page.

Beyond this, linkbuilding to the pages would be next steps.
